Explore Botobolar through a range of interests: wine history, archaeological finds, nature and experiences for farmstay guests. The surrounding area offers both historic points of interest and opportunities for walking and birdwatching. When planning your trip, it helps to distinguish these offerings by their nature: some tell the story of past developments, while others are specific activities or are available only as part of a guest stay.

Wine History in the Botobolar Area

Botobolar Vineyard was established in 1971 in the foothills of the Great Dividing Range, north of Mudgee. From the outset, its founders were committed to organic grape growing. The vineyard was the first to be certified organic. Production of wines without added preservatives began in 1984. Thus, 1971 and 1984 mark different points in its history: its founding with a commitment to organic practices, and the beginning of this production method.

Tour and Tasting

A winery tour in the surrounding area offers insight into winemaking and ends with a cellar-door tasting featuring the farm’s produce. If you plan to take this tour, check the booking conditions beforehand.

Archaeological Finds at Botobolar 5

Botobolar 5 is a rock shelter located northeast of Mudgee in New South Wales. A grinding stone was excavated there in 1975; the excavation also recovered 80 whole Macrozamia nuts or kernels. The surrounding area therefore offers a specific archaeological find as well as a history of winegrowing.

Nature, Birdwatching and Wiradjuri Heritage

The Munghorn Gap Nature Reserve is located in the surrounding area, in the Central Tablelands of New South Wales. It offers opportunities for birdwatching and walking, as well as views of sandstone pagoda formations. A total of 164 bird species have been recorded in the reserve; the species count may be updated as new surveys are conducted. The area is of particular significance to the Wiradjuri and has a significant Aboriginal heritage. If you choose a particular focus, birdwatching draws attention to the recorded species, while the sandstone pagodas shape the reserve’s landscape. Check current alerts and closure notices before your outing.

Experiences for Guests of York Huon

York Huon Farmhouse is the property’s original homestead, built in 1964 and later renovated. Guests of York Huon can explore the grounds and pastures, picnic, feed young farm animals and collect eggs. They can stargaze around a fire pit; live acoustic entertainment is also available by arrangement in advance. These experiences are available only as part of a guest stay.

A Longer Cycling Option

A route booklet published in 2008 describes a longer cycling route of 65.6 km in total to Munghorn Gap Nature Reserve and the Castle Rocks walking track. This provides a longer cycling option to these two destinations in addition to the walking and birdwatching opportunities mentioned above. As the route booklet was published in 2008 and route conditions may have changed, check current information before setting out.
