Byron Bay offers travelers a range of experiences: a trail through coastal landscapes to the lighthouse, nature watching, beach activities and cultural attractions. If you’re looking for a hotel in Byron Bay, the type of outings you have planned can help guide your preparations for your stay.

Walgun Cape Byron and the Lighthouse

The Walgun Cape Byron walking track passes through rainforest, across beaches, grassland and cliffs, and leads to Cape Byron Lighthouse. The lighthouse stands at Australia’s easternmost point and overlooks Byron Bay. It was built on the rugged headland in 1901.

The Maritime Museum is located at the foot of Cape Byron Lighthouse in the former lighthouse keeper’s residence. It is open daily from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. Tours of Cape Byron Lighthouse or the Maritime Museum, however, are offered only on limited days of the week and at limited times. For planning purposes, check the museum’s opening hours and tour times separately.

Coast, Nature and Beach Activities

Activities available in Arakwal National Park include birdwatching, whale watching, swimming, fishing and picnicking. Tallow Beach is 3.2 km from the centre of Byron Bay; activities there include swimming, bird and whale watching, and beach fishing. Wategos Beach is a place to picnic, paddle and play. Arakwal National Park and Tallow Beach both offer bird and whale watching; Wategos Beach adds paddling to the options.

Cultural Experiences and Surf Lessons

The guided Walgun Cape Byron Aboriginal cultural tour lasts 1.5 hours and is led by a local Aboriginal guide; it is available on request. Byron Bay Surf School offers two-hour surf lessons against the backdrop of the Walgun Cape Byron State Conservation Area; participation requires a booking and suitable session times. The surf lessons are half an hour longer than the cultural tour.

Market, Swimming Pool and Picnic Areas

The Byron Community Market is held at Main Beach on the first Sunday of every month from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm. Check the specific date before your trip. Byron Bay Swimming Pool has a 50-metre pool, a learn-to-swim pool and a wading pool. At Apex Park at Main Beach, there are free barbecue facilities, picnic tables, showers, toilets and swings for children. Pool facilities and programs may change, as may the park’s amenities; check the latest information before visiting.

For scheduling purposes, the market, museum and tours differ: the market is held on a set Sunday each month, the museum is open daily, and tours are offered on limited days of the week and at limited times. If you plan to visit several of these attractions, check the dates before your trip.
