Warialda offers several different ways to shape a stay: historic buildings, art and crafts, walking paths, Warialda Creek and an annual festival. If you’re looking for a hotel in Warialda, deciding which of these themes you’d like to spend time on can help you plan your stay. The options range from dated buildings to a collection of fossils, minerals and gemstones; outdoors, walking and hiking take centre stage.

Historic buildings and local history

Warialda Courthouse was built in 1883 to a design by Government Architect James Barnet. Warialda Soldiers Memorial Hall dates from 1929 and is a late example of classical architecture. St. Patrick’s Church on the Gwydir Highway was built in 1904. These buildings offer different points of reference in Warialda’s history and architecture.

Carinda House was built in 1880 and is a good example of residential architecture. Today it is the local centre for arts and crafts, with handmade crafts, artworks and changing exhibitions on display. The present-day Warialda Post Office also dates from 1880; it houses memorabilia from the courthouse.

Pioneer Cemetery is at the southern end of Stephen Street. Its graves date back to the 1850s, and a comprehensive list is displayed there. The Warialda Historical Building Walk leads to historic sites; the accompanying brochure is available at the Visitor Centre. This gives you a choice of both individual buildings with documented dates and a walk focused on history.

Art, collections and stories

The Wells Gem and Mineral Collection is housed at the Warialda Visitor Information Centre. It includes fossils, shells, minerals and gemstones, and was donated to the people of Warialda and the surrounding district. The collection offers a different focus from the buildings: here, the emphasis is on natural specimens and their variety.

Soundtrails also offers an app-based walking experience in Warialda. As you walk, you can listen to stories about the place’s culture, history and heritage. Together with the changing exhibitions at Carinda House, this offers a choice for travellers who would rather explore Warialda through art and storytelling than architecture.

Walks, trails and landscape

Warialda Creek, also known as Reedy Creek, flows through Warialda. It’s a good spot for watching small birds or enjoying a peaceful walk. For a longer route, the Koorilgur Walk provides a clear guide: the full route is 3.65 kilometres long, while the complete loop measures 6.9 kilometres. Rest benches and shorter loop options are also among its stated features. The two distances refer to different route descriptions, so they should not be understood as the same loop.

Cranky Rock Recreation Reserve is five kilometres east of Warialda. Huge boulders formed by past volcanic activity define the reserve; it also has a suspension bridge and a viewing platform. The trails offer the option of an easy walk or a more challenging hike. This lets you choose your visit according to the kind of route you prefer, while Warialda Creek offers an opportunity for a quieter walk in town.

Warialda Honey Festival

The Warialda Honey Festival is held annually and celebrates the area’s heritage, local produce, talent and community spirit. Market stalls offer locally produced food and preserves, and food trucks are also on site. The festival combines a sense of place with a specific food offering, but it takes place on set event dates. Check the dates for the relevant festival before making plans.

The themes can be arranged around your personal interests: architectural history and the cemetery, art and collections, trails and nature, or the annual festival. The historic sites are distinguished by their different construction dates and uses, while the trails vary in their stated distances and types of route. When planning your stay in Warialda, you can decide which aspects matter most to you.
