If you’re looking for a hotel in Dorroughby, it helps to consider the themes that define the area. Dorroughby lies on the edge of Nightcap National Park. The park’s rainforests are part of the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia World Heritage Area, the largest area of subtropical rainforest in the world. Dorroughby Environmental Education Centre borders both Nightcap National Park and Whian Whian State Forest. This brings together natural landscapes and environmental education in Dorroughby.

Environmental education in natural and built environments

The Centre supports environmental education for primary schools, secondary schools and universities, as well as government agencies and community groups. Its work includes the opportunity to conduct fieldwork in a variety of local natural and built environments. The focus is therefore not exclusively on forests and wilderness: designed and used environments are also part of the learning experience. Those interested in the connection between landscape and environmental education will find this a different way to explore Dorroughby than focusing on nature alone.

Routes and nature experiences

There are two different route options for getting around by road. One route from Lismore passes through Modanville, Dunoon and Dorroughby to Whian Whian State Conservation Area. Beyond Dorroughby Hall, it follows Nightcap Range Road to the entrance to the conservation area. Another route leads from Lismore through Dorroughby and on to Minyon Falls in Nightcap National Park. Both descriptions connect Dorroughby with a route from Lismore, but lead to different destinations.

The Minyon Falls walking track passes through rainforest to a scenic waterfall in Nightcap National Park. Nearby Whian Whian State Conservation Area also has mountain-bike trails. This offers different activity options for planning: a rainforest walk to the waterfall and mountain-bike trails in the conservation area. Closures and conditions on the trails in Whian Whian State Conservation Area may change, so check the latest visitor information before your visit.

History on the Nightcap Track

Nearby Nightcap Track also combines a trail with a historical role. In the 1870s, it served as the first bridle track and the first telegraph link between the Richmond and Tweed valleys. Today, you can explore the track on foot, and overnight bush camping is possible. This sets it apart from the routes described to the conservation area and Minyon Falls: here, the historical link between the valleys, along with walking and possible overnight bush stays, are central.

Nature and events at Nightcap Ridge

Nightcap Ridge is a 67-acre eco-destination in Dorroughby, in the Byron Bay hinterland. It is within Nightcap National Park and is part of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Gondwana Rainforests of Australia. The property is home to a koala population and a wide variety of native flora and fauna. Nightcap Ridge’s Palm Room is a limited-capacity venue for weddings and other events. Nature, environmental education, trails and an event venue offer different starting points for planning a trip; which ones matter to you depends on the purpose of your stay.
