A boardwalk connects the Visitor Information Centre near Giinagay Way with Bellwood Park and the V-Wall at the river mouth. This gives you a range of ways to experience places by the water, nature and cultural stories in Nambucca Shire. The Nambucca Valley follows the winding Nambucca River from the hinterland to the coast; the river and coast provide a common thread for finding your way around the destination.

Rivers and waterways

There are several different starting points for activities on the water. Kayaking is possible on the Nambucca River in the Nambucca Valley. Kayaking and canoeing are also offered on Warrell Creek in Gaagal Wanggaan (South Beach) National Park. The park has three access points here: Weir Reserve and Gumma Crossing Reserve have boat ramps, while the Warrell Creek picnic area offers access and picnic tables. Check local conditions before setting out.

Nambucca Shire also has passive launch sites for canoes and kayaks near the RSL Club Boat Ramp and in Gordon Park. These sites must not be used as boat ramps for motorised watercraft. If you plan your trip around the water, distinguishing between the options on the Nambucca River, access points on Warrell Creek and the explicitly passive launch sites can help you keep suitable places in mind.

Lookouts, rainforest and wildlife

Kosekai lookout offers views across the expansive Nambucca Valley to the coast and opportunities for birdwatching. Dunggir National Park features different natural highlights: the park is home to at least twelve threatened animal species, 400 native plant species and three types of rainforest. Bushwalking is another experience available there; the walks are challenging in nature.

Yarriabini National Park complements these natural highlights with a scenic drive. Birds found there include wedge-tailed eagles, rainforest pigeons and red-tailed black cockatoos. Together, the Nambucca Valley and surrounding destination offer a variety of nature experiences: views from Kosekai lookout across the valley and coast, the rainforest types and biodiversity of Dunggir National Park, and the birdlife of Yarriabini National Park.

Gumbaynggirr culture and history

The Nambucca Valley is on Gumbaynggirr Country. Gaagal Wanggaan (South Beach) National Park holds great cultural significance for the Gumbaynggirr community of the Nambucca Valley. Sites in the park show that the area has been used continuously for thousands of years. The national park is jointly managed by the Aboriginal people of the Nambucca Valley and NPWS.

The V-Wall in Nambucca Heads also bears visible reminders of its visitors: over the years, people have painted holiday messages, inspiring words and personal memories on the rocks. The destination’s museums focus on other aspects of history. The Frank Partridge VC Military Museum displays a large collection of Navy, Army and Air Force artefacts. The Mary Boulton Pioneer Cottage and Museum comprises seven exhibition buildings containing mementos.

Art and local information

Nambucca Valley Phoenix showcases locally made artworks, ceramics and handmade gifts. The Stringer Art Gallery in Nambucca Heads focuses on works by local artists. Markets in the Nambucca Valley bring together food, creativity and community. Together, these offerings provide different perspectives on local life: historical collections, visual art, handmade works and markets with their community spirit.

For trip planning, the Nambucca Valley Visitor Information Centre provides information about local and regional attractions as well as upcoming events. The team can also help you find accommodation and provides maps and brochures. If you’re planning your hotel choice, this information can help you include the outings and experiences that interest you in your travel plans.
