When planning a hotel stay in Strathfield, you can choose from a range of interests: play and sports, environmental education, or local history. Strathfield Park offers specific points of interest for the first two; historical details relate to both the park and Strathfield Station. These topics differ depending on whether you are looking for leisure activities or are interested in the history of the place name and how the area has been used.

Play and Sports Facilities at Strathfield Park

Strathfield Park has two children’s playgrounds, as well as a children’s bicycle track. For a trip with children, these are specific opportunities for play and exercise. There are also sports fields with synthetic and natural grass, used for cricket and soccer. These areas complement the play spaces with field sports, giving the park another focus alongside its leisure activities for children.

The two multipurpose courts are designated for different sports: Court 1 is for basketball and paddleball, while Court 2 is for badminton and pickleball. If you have one of these sports in mind, you can choose a court by its number. By contrast, cricket and soccer are played on the synthetic- and natural-grass sports fields. The park therefore differs not only by activity, but also by the type of sports facility.

Environmental Education on the Strathfield Park Environmental Trail

The Strathfield Park Environmental Trail has a different focus. Established in 2008, it consists of figure-eight-shaped paths with a total length of about 1.3 kilometres. The figure-eight shape describes the route, while the approximate total length gives an idea of the trail as a whole. Along the paths are eleven environmental themes, with information panels and themed plantings. The paths are intended for informal recreation and environmental education experiences. The panels and plantings bring these themes into the trail’s surroundings. The difference from the sports facilities is clear when choosing what interests you: the trail focuses on informal recreation and environmental education, while the fields and courts are for the specified sports.

Historical Connections to the Park and Station

The park is also associated with two distinct historical events. During the Second World War, the Australian armed forces requisitioned Strathfield Park as a military training ground. In August 1945, a large thanksgiving service was held in the park to celebrate victory in the Pacific War. The first detail concerns the armed forces’ use of the park; the second refers to a specific event in August 1945.

Strathfield Station has its own history. In 1876, it was established as a simple passenger stop under the name Redmyre. In 1886, the station was renamed from Redmyre to Strathfield. The sequence shows how the name changed: first the passenger stop was established as Redmyre, and ten years later it bore the name Strathfield. The station’s history therefore complements the park’s history with a different question: how a place name at the station developed over time.
