Thredbo Village: Trails, mountain activities and seasonal experiences

In Thredbo Village, mountain trails, mountain biking options and seasonal leisure activities offer different reasons to visit. When planning a stay, the time of year matters: a summit trail, fly fishing, winter lift passes and individual facilities each have their own conditions. So, when looking for a hotel in Thredbo Village, you can check whether the activities you want to enjoy fall within your travel dates.

Trails to the summit and along the river

The Kosciuszko Walk from Thredbo leads to the summit of Mount Kosciuszko. Along the way, the trail passes rocky granite outcrops in the Ramshead Range; in spring, it winds through alpine wildflowers. Flowering conditions can vary. Roads and trails can also be affected by the weather and park management. If you are planning to hike the summit trail during your visit, check current conditions in advance.

The self-guided Riverside–Golf-Course Walk offers a different route: it starts in Thredbo Village and follows the Thredbo River. The key difference is the route’s focus: the Kosciuszko Walk leads to the summit, while the river defines the Riverside–Golf-Course Walk.

Mountain biking lessons and disc golf

The Thredbo MTB School offers Intro-to-MTB sessions, Fundamentals courses and Progression courses, as well as private lessons. The program caters to riders of all skill levels. The different formats give you a specific range of options if mountain biking lessons are part of your travel plans. Seasonal schedules can change, so check the relevant dates before your trip.

The disc golf course has 18 holes set among bushland, open fields and eucalyptus trees. The activity is weather-dependent and enjoyable for people of all ages and skill levels. This makes disc golf a distinct leisure option alongside the trails and mountain biking lessons, without all activities being subject to the same seasonal conditions.

Winter activities on the mountain and slopes

A winter lift pass gives you access to Thredbo’s mountain lifts for skiing and snowboarding, including the Merritts Gondola. Lift-pass products and what they include are seasonal and can change. If lift access is essential to your trip, check in advance which services are planned for that winter.

The Family Flare Run is part of a long-running weekly Flare Run tradition. In winter, participants ski or snowboard on Friday Flat every Thursday evening, carrying glowing LED torches beneath the night sky. The run ends with a large fireworks display; the fireworks are weather-dependent. Registration may be required, and the event itself is also weather-dependent.

Fly fishing and leisure facilities

The fly-fishing season on the Thredbo River and its tributaries runs from the October Long Weekend to the June Long Weekend. If fly fishing is a reason for your trip, you can plan around these seasonal dates. This is a different time frame from the weekly winter dates of the Flare Runs.

The Thredbo Leisure Centre is a five-minute walk from Thredbo Village Square and Friday Flat. Facilities include a gym, a swimming pool with a water slide and Mission Inflatable, a sports hall, a bouldering wall, a squash court and a leisure centre with a trampoline. Schedules and individual offerings can vary seasonally. So, if a particular facility is important to your plans, check its schedule before your visit.

Thredbo’s 9-hole golf course runs alongside the Thredbo River and around the base of the mountain. It is currently closed and is expected to reopen in summer 2026/27. The two tennis courts are also currently closed and are expected to reopen in summer 2026/27. If golf or tennis is part of your travel plans, take this status into account when choosing your travel dates.
