Waterfall and gorge

Wollomombi Falls plunges 220 metres into Wollomombi Gorge in Oxley Wild Rivers National Park. The waterfall is considered Australia’s second-highest. Its drop and the gorge define the destination’s natural character. The lookouts offer different perspectives on waterfalls, gorges and river courses, making it easy to identify Wollomombi’s clearly named natural attractions.

Picnic area and Main Falls lookout

The Wollomombi Falls picnic area is in the Wollomombi Falls precinct of Oxley Wild Rivers National Park. The area is level and step-free. Paved paths lead from the car park to the facilities and nearby lookout. A 200-metre path leads from the picnic area to Wollomombi Main Falls lookout. This lookout offers views of waterfalls plunging into the gorge below. For planning purposes, keep the details separate: level and step-free describes the picnic area; 200 metres refers to the path to the lookout.

Two walking tracks

The Chandler walking track starts at the Wollomombi Falls picnic area. It offers opportunities for birdwatching and scenic views from Checks lookout. Checks lookout offers views of waterfalls and gorges along the Chandler River. This lookout therefore focuses on the river landscape, while Main Falls lookout looks towards waterfalls in the gorge below. Vegetation and wildlife sightings vary.

The Wollomombi walking track crosses the Wollomombi River and leads to Chandlers waterfall. It runs along the edge of Wollomombi Gorge. Chandler Falls lookout is at the end of the track and offers views of the Chandler River plunging through the gorge below. The track also offers opportunities for wildlife watching and birdwatching. The river crossing and waterfall destination give this walk a different focus from the viewpoints at the picnic area.

The lookouts differ

The two track names are similar, but their landmarks differ: the Chandler walking track starts at the picnic area and is associated with Checks lookout; the Wollomombi walking track crosses the Wollomombi River to Chandlers waterfall and ends at Chandler Falls lookout. So if you want to decide in advance which destination to visit, check the full name of the track and lookout. Main Falls lookout is separate: it is reached via the 200-metre path from the picnic area.

Conditions before your visit

Visibility at Wollomombi Main Falls lookout varies with the weather. Water levels and track conditions on the Wollomombi walking track change; erosion or safety work may affect access to the Chandler walking track. Conditions in the Wollomombi Falls precinct can also change. Check current park information before your visit if you have a particular track or lookout in mind. This will help you plan your chosen natural attractions around the conditions at the time.
