Explore Ascot through several themes: racing history, historic homes and parks with play areas. When choosing your destination, you can weigh up whether you are particularly interested in the history of the racecourse, architecture from different periods, or green spaces with facilities for children. Together, the examples give Ascot a multifaceted historical and landscape profile.

Racing and Local History

The Ascot and Hamilton Heritage Trail covers themes from Ascot and Hamilton. These include the origins of the racecourse, significant wartime activities, and the commercial and residential development history of Racecourse Road and its large mansions. The themes range from the development of racing to the history of a street and its buildings.

Eagle Farm Racecourse was established in 1865 and has hosted thoroughbred racing throughout its more than 150-year history. During the Second World War, it became the first US camp established in Australia. These two milestones show different historical aspects of the same place: its longstanding significance to thoroughbred racing and its role during the war.

The Thoroughbred Racing Museum complements this focus with photographs, paintings, trophies, jockey silks, memorabilia and stories of great racing champions. Visits are by appointment only. If you plan to visit the museum, you should therefore book an appointment in advance.

Architecture from Different Periods

Nyrambla in Ascot reflects the suburb’s development in the late 19th century, when large houses were built on the hills. Tattersalls Lodge is also part of this historic context: the building was constructed in the 1890s as accommodation for horse trainers and their families. Wellington offers a different perspective. The timber house was designed around 1889 by James St. Clair Ferguson for banker James Congreve.

Two examples from 1938 have different architectural designations: Chateau Nous is an example of Functionalist architecture; Meerawa and Yearinga are a pair of Art Deco houses that retain many original features. Together with Nyrambla, Tattersalls Lodge and Wellington, these buildings provide a timeline from late-19th-century residential development to different 20th-century styles. Both the date of construction and the architectural classification are useful when comparing them.

Play Areas and Views

Ascot Park offers children three playhouses, slides, swings, a climbing net and a water play area. Oriel Park has different features: a picnic shelter, tables and seating, a toilet block, and a fenced playground with play equipment. Comparing the two parks by specific features, the water play area and playhouses are distinctive features of Ascot Park; Oriel Park combines its playground with the seating and picnic facilities mentioned above. If particular facilities are important to your plans, it is worth checking current council information before your visit.

There is also a stationary steamroller in the playground at Oriel Park, possibly an Aveling & Porter model from around 1920 that was used for road construction. This detail connects the play area with the history of technology. It also distinguishes Oriel Park from Ascot Park, whose listed play features range from playhouses and climbing equipment to a water play area.

Bartley’s Hill Reserve offers a different perspective. The reserve includes water reservoirs and a lookout and is situated on a prominent hill in Ascot. The hill appears to have been used as a public vantage point since at least 1925. In Ascot, specific play facilities in the parks sit alongside a hilltop lookout and historical themes ranging from racing and architecture to the development of a suburb.
