Cow Bay: Rainforest and secluded coves
Accommodation in Cow Bay
The Daintree Discovery Centre is located in Cow Bay on the way to Cape Tribulation. In Cow Bay, nature lovers can explore lowland rainforest trails and the coast. If you’re planning a visit to the Centre, check the current opening hours in advance.
Jindalba: Rainforest trails
The Jindalba Rainforest Circuit is 700 metres long and takes about 30 minutes. Walking time can vary depending on conditions, so half an hour is a guide, not a fixed time requirement. Its length and approximate duration give you concrete points of reference when planning the walk during your stay.
The Jindalba Boardwalk passes through lowland rainforest at heights of up to four metres, offering views of the rainforest below. Turn off the Great Barrier Reef Drive (Cape Tribulation Road) at the Daintree Discovery Centre; the start of the boardwalk is accessible via Tulip Oak Road in Cow Bay. Buchanan Creek Road, by contrast, leads to the beach.
Different features can help you choose between the two Jindalba experiences: the circuit’s length and approximate duration provide a guide to how long it will take; the boardwalk offers views of the forest below. This lets you distinguish a walk with a stated distance and time from a trail with an elevated view of the forest.
Cow Bay Beach and the tides
Cow Bay Beach has three secluded coves to explore. At low tide, you can walk north around the headland from the beach to reach more secluded beaches. The coves are along the beach; walking around the headland at low tide gives you the option to continue further north.
Access to Cow Bay Beach is via Buchanan Creek Road: turn off the Great Barrier Reef Drive (Cape Tribulation Road) at the ice cream shop. There are picnic tables and a public toilet at the car park. Visitor facilities can change or be temporarily unavailable. If you rely on them, check their current status before your visit.
Different points of reference apply when planning each experience: the rainforest circuit’s approximate duration of 30 minutes is useful, while the beach walk around the headland depends on low tide. So if both activities are part of your stay, take into account both the estimated time and the tide.
The name Jindalba
Jindalba is the Kuku Yalanji’s traditional name for this area and means “foot of the mountain”. For a nature trip, this cultural significance complements the trail descriptions with a local name and its meaning.
