Daydream Island can be experienced through both its manageable size and the Living Reef. The island is about one kilometre long and can be crossed on foot in 20 minutes. It also offers coral beaches, reef-related activities and experiences for a range of interests. When choosing a destination for your stay, these specific highlights can help you match the island to your plans.

The Living Reef and its facilities

The Living Reef is a free-form coral lagoon that extends 200 metres around the central building. It provides a habitat for more than 100 species of native marine life, including fish, rays and other reef-dwelling animals. For guests with a particular interest in coral and marine life, the reef is a defining part of the island experience.

The Living Reef Exploration Centre overlooks the main lagoon and includes touch pools, a theatre and exhibitions. The underwater observatory is fully covered, so it can also be visited in the rain. Activities at the Living Reef are also offered to guests by the marine biologists based there. The reef experience therefore includes both the lagoon itself and facilities and activities focused on its underwater world.

Coral beaches, snorkelling and water activities

Coral beaches are among Daydream Island’s features. On the eastern side of the island, you can snorkel from the beach at the fringing reef just offshore. The beach areas therefore also differ in how the reef is incorporated into activities: on the eastern side, snorkelling is possible from the beach, while the Living Reef—with its lagoon, observatory and Exploration Centre—offers a focus of its own.

Guests can use kayaks on Daydream Island; stand-up paddleboards are available to hire. Equipment availability may change. The activities currently on offer also include an outdoor cinema. If you would like to include it in your plans, check the programme and weather-dependent arrangements before visiting, as these may change.

Restaurants and breakfast

Graze Restaurant overlooks the Living Reef lagoon and serves a breakfast buffet daily. Opening arrangements may change, so check them before your visit. Salti Restaurant & Bar combines Whitsunday seafood with Mediterranean flavours. Menus and opening arrangements may also change. The two restaurants offer different highlights: Graze focuses on breakfast with a view of the lagoon, while Salti brings together seafood and Mediterranean flavours.

Family stays and the island’s character

During a family stay at Daydream Island Resort, the Cockatoo Club is for children aged 4 to 12. This age range can help you factor the offering into your family-stay plans. It applies to the club at the resort and the stated age group.

Daydream Island’s operations take account of its location within the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area. Daydream Island Resort holds an ECOTOURISM certification from Eco Tourism Australia. The custom-built coral propagation pools are also part of the island’s context: they were established to grow coral fragments for the restoration of various coral reefs at the Lover’s Cove site. These reefs had been damaged by Cyclone Debbie in 2017.

Getting to the island

A shuttle runs from Whitsunday Coast Airport to the Port of Airlie. There, transfer to the direct ferry to Daydream Island. You will need to allow for both the shuttle and the ferry when planning your journey; transfer schedules and booking requirements may change. Check the latest information before you travel. The island can be crossed on foot in about 20 minutes, while its different offerings—such as snorkelling, the Living Reef or the outdoor cinema—provide different focuses for your stay.
