Eurong on K'gari: 75 Mile Beach and the Central Station Walk
Accommodation in Eurong
Eurong and K'gari
Eurong is on K'gari, a World Heritage-listed island formerly known as Fraser Island. K'gari is the island's current name; Fraser Island is its former name. 75 Mile Beach serves as Eurong's main road and shapes how visitors get around the area. Eurong is considered a destination for four-wheel-drive enthusiasts. When planning your stay, also consider getting around the island: K'gari is suitable only for four-wheel-drive vehicles, and you can hire four-wheel drives on the island. Check the current conditions before your trip.
Accommodation in Eurong
Eurong has privately operated apartment-, motel- and resort-style accommodation. Holiday houses and cabins are also available for rent in the area. If you are specifically looking for a hotel, check the type of accommodation and the details of each listing when making your choice; holiday houses and cabins are separate types of rental accommodation. Check availability again before booking.
Getting your bearings
The QPWS office in Eurong is generally unattended for visitor enquiries because rangers are out in the field; information signs are available on site. The office also has information displays. Self-service packs containing brochures, a current conditions report and a camping trailer are also available. These are intended, among others, for visitors who want to change or extend their stay. If this applies to you, check the permit procedures before your trip.
There is a tap on the beach in front of the QPWS ranger station and police station. If you plan to use it, check water availability on site.
Walking between Eurong and Central Station
The Central Station Walk starts at Eurong Beach and connects the area with the K'gari Great Walk at Central Station. It is 10.5 km one way. To reach the track, follow the footpath to the left of the main entrance, over the foredunes and through a gate in the dingo-proof fence around the area. Check current park alerts before setting out, as conditions on site may change.
The walk passes through several vegetation types: from the beach, it first goes through low wallum banksia woodland with swamp tea-trees, then through open eucalypt forest with coastal she-oaks, scribbly gums, blackbutts and bloodwoods, before reaching lush rainforest. If you enjoy experiencing different types of vegetation on a walk, the route offers a distinct sequence.
More things to do on K'gari
If camping is an option for you, the fenced Wongai camping area is south of Eurong on the east beach; access is by four-wheel drive. Unlike the holiday houses and cabins rented in the area, this is a camping area nearby. Conditions and availability may change, so check the latest information before visiting.
Beach fishing is also possible on K'gari; bait, line and fishing gear are recommended. You can plan the walk around its one-way distance of 10.5 km; for beach fishing, bait, line and fishing gear are the recommended equipment.
