The Fraser Coast is located within the Great Sandy Biosphere, which is part of a worldwide network of biosphere reserves. In addition to this broad landscape context, there are specific experiences to enjoy in different places when planning a trip: trails on K'gari, waterfront and marine experiences in Hervey Bay, and walks and heritage attractions in Maryborough. The options range from nature and outdoor activities to urban history.

Nature experiences on K'gari

On K'gari, there are short boardwalks through rainforests, walking trails beside a lake and longer hikes across a sand dune. The trails differ both in length and setting: forest, lakeside and sand dune offer different experiences on foot. If you want to include exercise in your daily plans, you can treat shorter trails and longer hikes as different activities rather than as similar tours.

Mountain biking is also permitted on K'gari, specifically on the eastern and western beaches. This adds another activity to the walking trails, with the beach locations explicitly identified. When planning, you can therefore choose between walking and hiking trails in different landscapes and cycling on beaches in both directions.

Waterfront and marine life in Hervey Bay

In Hervey Bay, five safe swimming beaches stretch along the 16 km Esplanade waterfront promenade. The beaches and promenade are a distinct focus for spending time by the water. The swimming beaches and the long waterfront promenade can be considered different aspects of the waterfront area, rather than combined into a single experience.

Reefworld Aquarium in Hervey Bay is a completely natural aquarium. It uses only sand-filtered seawater and natural sunlight. Adults and children can feed marine animals there; at the touch pool, you can also experience what marine life feels like. Hervey Bay therefore offers both outdoor experiences by the waterfront and an aquarium visit with direct contact with marine life.

Walks and heritage in Maryborough

The Maryborough Mural Trail is 2 km long and passes through 10 city blocks. You can walk it in sections if you prefer, or complete it as one continuous walking tour. These two options give your visit a different structure: you can explore individual sections or plan the trail as a continuous walk, while keeping its stated length and number of city blocks in mind.

In Maryborough, you can join a free guided heritage walking tour from City Hall. You can also ride through nearby Queen's Park on The Mary Ann, a replica steam locomotive. Alongside exploring the Mural Trail at your own pace, you can choose a guided tour or a ride on a replica steam locomotive as separate experiences.

If you are looking for a hotel for your trip, a good first step may be to decide what you want to focus on during your stay: trails and beach activities on K'gari, the waterfront and marine life in Hervey Bay, or walks and heritage experiences in Maryborough. This lets you plan around the activities that interest you most.
