Beach and southern views

Main Beach’s long sandy beaches offer plenty of space, with views south towards the city skyline. By the sea, you can go for a walk and watch the sunrise. Walking and watching the sunrise offer different ways to spend time at the beach: getting active by the water or looking towards the early morning sky. The southern city skyline adds an urban perspective to this coastal view.

Swimming and surfing

Main Beach has two swimming areas patrolled by lifeguards, in front of Lifeguard Towers 39 and 40. Patrols may change, so check the latest local notices before swimming. Surfers sometimes find waves along exposed stretches of beach. Wave quality depends on swell direction, wind and the formation of sandbanks. These are different considerations when planning: for swimming, follow the patrolled areas and current notices; for surfing, keep in mind the changing wave conditions.

Trails and landscape in the Federation Walk Coastal Reserve

A network of built trails and paths in the Federation Walk Coastal Reserve provides opportunities for hiking, jogging, cycling and birdwatching. The reserve includes one of the few remaining undeveloped dune systems on the Gold Coast and forms part of a regionally significant coastal vegetation corridor. Here, a range of outdoor activities sit alongside a dune and vegetation landscape that shapes the character of the coastal area.

Federation Walk passes beneath the sand bypass bridge and follows a path to the southern training wall of the Gold Coast Seaway. This specific route is distinct from the reserve’s trail network, which enables the activities mentioned above. To find your way around, both the trail network and the route of Federation Walk are relevant.

The Spit and parklands by the Seaway

The Spit extends into the Seaway and forms the transition between the Gold Coast Broadwater and the open ocean. This also makes the coastal area geographically interesting: the Broadwater and the open ocean are the two bodies of water between which the transition lies. Public parklands near the Seaway include Doug Jennings Park on the Broadwater and Philip Park on the ocean side.

The area is used for picnics, fishing, boating, dog walking and recreation. Activities range from picnicking and relaxing on land to water-based pursuits and walks with dogs. As facilities and access may change, check current local notices before visiting.

Facilities in the beach parklands

The beach parklands in Main Beach have barbecues, tables, shade structures, playgrounds and beach showers. In addition to places to sit and barbecue, these areas also offer playgrounds and showers. The availability of individual facilities may change.
