Morven: Discover Culture and History
Accommodation in Morven
Morven may be of interest to travellers who take local history and commemorative culture into account when choosing a destination. Its attractions focus on different themes: the Morven Historical Museum showcases everyday life in the early Australian outback; the Leichhardt Rabbit Gate represents the history of the Rabbit Board fence; and the Dick Baker Shed & Old Machinery Display turns the spotlight on old agricultural machinery. There are also memorial sites. Together, they offer different ways to explore Morven’s history.
Museum and Vietnam Nurses Memorial
The Morven Historical Museum focuses on everyday life in the early Australian outback, offering an insight into daily life during a particular period. The museum complex is also home to the Vietnam Nurses Memorial. It features a permanent photographic exhibition devoted exclusively to the 353 Australian women who served as nurses in Vietnam between 1964 and 1972. The number, period and professional role clearly define the subject: the exhibition focuses on this group and their work, rather than presenting a general account of the Vietnam War. If you plan to visit the memorial, check the museum’s opening hours before travelling.
Leichhardt Rabbit Gate and Dick Baker Shed
The Leichhardt Rabbit Gate stands on Morven’s main street, east of the Dick Baker Shed. The shed is on the eastern side of Morven. The gate is one of the original gates in the Leichhardt Rabbit Board fence, which once crossed the Warrego Highway. This places the gate both within Morven and in its historical context of the fence and highway. The main street identifies its location; the fence and highway provide the historical connection. Those interested in the history of the fence will find a tangible point of reference here.
The Dick Baker Shed & Old Machinery Display has a different focus: it showcases a collection from a bygone era, including old agricultural machinery. The collection was assembled over generations and donated by Dick Baker and Malcolm and Boosie Crichton. The display therefore also tells the story of a collection built up over a long period and names its donors. Unlike the gate, with its connection to the Rabbit Board fence, the shed focuses on machinery and the collection in which it is displayed.
Memorials in Morven
Morven’s cenotaph bears the “Rolls of Honour” with the names of people who served in both world wars and the Vietnam War. The lists record names from three conflicts. The Morven War Memorial serves as a gathering place for ANZAC Day services and commemorative events. These sites represent different forms of remembrance: the Rolls of Honour commemorate people by name, while the War Memorial serves as a venue for services and events. Along with the museum, gate and shed, these memorials add to the historical themes you can consider when choosing Morven as a destination.
