Mount Isa City: Fossils, History and Art
Accommodation in Mount Isa City
Discover Mount Isa City through a range of themes: fossils, mining and everyday history, art and events. Mount Isa is on the traditional lands of the Kalkadoon people. Outback at Isa is Mount Isa’s official visitor information centre and a useful point of orientation for your stay.
Fossils and mining history
The Riversleigh Fossil Discovery Centre focuses on finds from the Oligocene and Miocene epochs. The fossils are about 15 to 25 million years old. Life-size displays and interactive exhibits show the ancestors of early marsupials, birds and reptiles. You can explore the subject through both the fossils on display and vivid representations of the animals that once lived there.
The Centre also offers guided behind-the-scenes tours of its working fossil laboratory. These tours add a glimpse into an active lab to your visit to the exhibits. If you’re particularly interested in fossils, you can choose between two ways to explore the subject: the finds on display and a guided behind-the-scenes perspective.
Underground history and past ways of life
The Underground Hospital is presented as Australia’s first and only underground hospital. Four tunnels are set up according to the original 1942 layout. But Mount Isa’s past can also be explored beyond its underground spaces: the heritage-listed Tent House documents a solution to the housing shortage during the early mining boom of the 1930s.
The Beth Anderson Museum focuses on antique medical equipment, rare historical objects and stories from Mount Isa’s past. Together, these places offer different historical perspectives: from the tunnel layout and a response to the housing shortage to medical objects and local stories. Depending on your interests, you can focus more on building history, living conditions or collection items.
Art, a walking tour and rodeo
The Maltha Waru Regional Arts Workshop provides a platform for local Indigenous artists to present painting, sculpture and wearable art. The Mount Isa Regional Art Gallery at Outback at Isa displays works by local and regional artists. Another way to discover art around the city is the self-guided Mount Isa Arts & Culture Walk. It takes you through the city and includes murals, public sculptures, galleries and cultural landmarks. Each offers a different focus: presenting artistic work, displaying artworks and exploring art in public spaces.
The Mount Isa Rodeo is an annual event that runs for three days. The Isa Rodeo program includes bull riding, steer wrestling, live entertainment, races and rides. If the rodeo is a key part of your stay, check the specific event dates before travelling.
City views, nature and other activities
The Mount Isa City Lookout offers 360-degree views of the city and mining area. Outback Park at Outback at Isa provides a different perspective on the natural surroundings: the native botanical garden attracts a wide variety of bird species. You can choose between panoramic views of the city and mining area and a garden that offers birdwatching opportunities.
Mount Isa’s Family Fun Precinct includes Splashez Aquatic Centre, Family Fun Park and Mount Isa Skate Park. These places add more individual destinations within the city to its museums, art offerings and historical sites. When planning your trip, you can choose between fossils and history, art and a city walk, nature watching, views and the Precinct’s attractions.
