Discover Rockhampton Regional through several distinct visitor themes: tropical and subtropical plants, railway history, river fishing, and trails through forest and garden landscapes. Rockhampton itself is home to cultural and recreational facilities; other nature and activity destinations are located in the surrounding area or within the regional council area. To plan your trip, you can first decide whether gardens, historic sites, river activities or outdoor recreation will shape your stay.

Nature and the River around Rockhampton

In the surrounding area, Mount Archer National Park protects 4,250 hectares of open forests and woodland. A large area of dry rainforest lies in the deeply incised Moores Creek Valley. The birdlife of Mount Archer is also part of this natural setting: various forest bird species live there, including endangered Powerful Owls. Sightings are seasonal and not guaranteed.

One specific route in this area is the elevated Nurim Circuit on Mount Archer. The accessible circuit is 500 metres long and offers west-facing views over Rockhampton and the Fitzroy River. Check the condition of the trail and facilities before your visit. This offers two distinct options: protected landscapes and a clearly measured, short circuit.

In the heart of Rockhampton, there are numerous fishing spots along the Fitzroy River (Tunuba). You can fish from a boat, join a charter or cast a line from the bank. In the wider region, the Fitzroy River Net Free Zone was introduced on 1 November 2015 to support recreational fishing and tourism in the Rockhampton region.

Gardens and Railway History

Established in 1869, the Rockhampton Botanic Gardens cover 33 hectares and have been heritage-listed since 1999. Extensive tropical and subtropical plant collections make them a destination for horticultural interest as well as peaceful exploration. The gardens’ history, heritage listing and collections each offer a different perspective on the site.

The Archer Park Rail Museum explores the development of rail transport in Rockhampton and the history of Archer Park Station, built in 1899. On weekends, the museum offers rides on the fully restored Purrey Steam Tram. Check opening days before your trip so you can plan your visit around the rides.

Trails, Recreation Spots and What's On

Kershaw Gardens stretch for one kilometre along the Bruce Highway. A walking trail passes through wetlands and rainforest and by a waterfall. The central area adds a playground, a monorail and an artificial water feature to this landscape. There is also an area modelled on the Fitzroy River (Tunuba), where families can splash and play.

In the Rockhampton Regional Council area, Rockhampton Heritage Village features original and replica buildings, along with memorabilia and artefacts. They illustrate life in the region from the 1850s to the 1950s. School holiday activities are held at Easter and during the June/July and September holidays; markets are also held several times a year. Specific dates vary.

Pilbeam Theatre offers a diverse year-round program featuring local, national and international artists. As the program changes, it’s worth checking what’s on during your travel dates. Rockhampton Zoo is home to almost 100 animals from more than 31 Australian and exotic species; animal numbers and the mix of species may change.

For mountain biking, First Turkey is in the surrounding area. Its 33 trails cater to different skill levels. Conditions are weather-dependent, so check them before your ride. The options range from a short, accessible circuit on Mount Archer to trails suited to different riding abilities.
