You can plan your stay around the experiences that interest you most—from landscapes and the riverside to art and history.

Views, Gardens and Trails

Castle Hill combines a prominent lookout with a walking trail, completed in 2021, that connects the hill with the central business district. The city’s botanical gardens offer another way to spend time outdoors. The Palmetum covers 17 hectares and is home to one of the world’s largest and most diverse public palm collections. The 25-hectare Anderson Gardens is home to the World Cycad Collection. Each collection has its own botanical focus.

There is also a specific walking route to explore: the Anderson Botanic Garden Circuit is signposted, 1,554 metres long and comprises 1,942 steps. The Anderson Gardens Conservatory offers a free experience suitable for all ages and abilities. Queens Gardens, meanwhile, is Townsville’s oldest botanical garden, is heritage-listed and dates back to 1870. When planning, you can include a range of garden visits—from distinctive plant collections to a historic garden.

Heritage and Art

Jezzine Barracks is a 15-hectare heritage precinct that commemorates the military and Indigenous heritage of the Kissing Point headland. The precinct includes 34 specially commissioned public artworks. The Strand waterfront is also home to Ocean Siren, a four-metre-tall illuminated sculpture by Jason deCaires Taylor. Inspired by Takoda Johnson, a young girl from the Wulgurukaba people, it serves as a warning signal about the threat that warming seas pose to the Great Barrier Reef.

The art scene encompasses a range of perspectives and formats. The Perc Tucker Regional Gallery presents exhibitions by local, national and international artists. The biennial North Queensland Ceramic Awards showcase works by established and emerging artists. The Pinnacles Gallery is an art space at Riverway dedicated to community engagement, artistic development and contemporary practice.

River Landscapes and Museums

Riverway is in Thuringowa Central on the banks of the Ross River. Visitors can swim in the lagoons and walk along the river. Together with the Pinnacles Gallery, Riverway offers both waterside activities and a way to experience contemporary art. Queensland Museum Tropics can be reached on foot, by car or by public transport. Its permanent exhibition, “Discover Tropical Queensland,” takes visitors through the environments of North Queensland—from the deepest ocean areas to the highest rainforests.

The Townsville Museum preserves and presents Townsville’s history from the early 1860s onward. Its extensive collection includes artefacts, photographs and plans of former buildings in Townsville; some of these buildings are no longer part of the cityscape. The collection offers another perspective on the area’s development. You can combine museum visits with the cultural offerings at Jezzine Barracks and the galleries when making your plans, while recognising that each offers something different.
