Tugun brings together beach life, a historic venue and a mixed-use shopping precinct. Each place offers something different to consider for your visit: at the beach, conditions for swimming can change; Tom Atkin Hall focuses on history and cultural events; and Cornerstone Stores is shaped by independent businesses. The details below can help you weigh these interests when planning your stay.

Tugun Beach and Swimming

Swimming conditions vary along Tugun Beach. The patrolled area by the Tugun Surf Club is considered the best place to swim. Tugun Surf Life Saving Club monitors the beach; its volunteer lifesavers have patrolled there since 1925. Your decision therefore depends on both the section of beach and the current assessment on site. Check local conditions and lifesaving advice before swimming. The recommendation for the area by the Surf Club applies to this patrolled section. As conditions vary along the beach, you should not assume it applies to other sections.

Tom Atkin Hall: History and Culture

Tom Atkin Hall was built by volunteers in the 1960s and originally served as a local venue for public meetings and events. Today, it is a historic landmark and a centre for cultural events. These include wellness groups, choirs, dance, live music and theatrical performances. Its original function and its current cultural use offer different insights into the Hall’s role: it represents both Tugun’s community history and local events and activities.

As a public venue, the Hall is available to everyone in the community to organise or attend shows, events, classes and group activities. If you want to visit the Hall for a particular class or performance, check the relevant date. Its general use as a venue does not in itself say anything about a specific event day.

Cornerstone Stores and its Shops

Cornerstone Stores is a mixed-use retail precinct in Tugun, directly opposite Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary. The complex has nine independent businesses, including a café, a fromagerie and wine shop, an organic butcher, a hair salon, a wellness studio, a holiday accommodation provider, a lifestyle boutique, an activewear retailer and a teacher training centre. The mix therefore ranges from food and drink to services, wellness, fashion and training. The precinct brings together different types of businesses rather than focusing on a single kind of shop.

The mix of businesses may change over time. If you plan to visit Cornerstone Stores for a particular offering, check in advance whether the business you’re looking for is currently there. This keeps your plans focused on what you’re seeking, without assuming that the mix of shops stays the same.

Courtyard and Getting Your Bearings

Cornerstone Stores is arranged around an inward-facing courtyard with a pandanus palm at its centre. The courtyard describes the layout within the precinct; its location directly opposite Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary is a separate landmark in the surrounding area. These two details answer different questions: one gives you a sense of how the complex is arranged, while the other helps you place it in the local area.
