Accommodation in Jandowae
Jandowae brings together cultural and historical attractions, nature watching and outdoor activities. For planning your trip, you can group the attractions by their main focus: Athlone Cottage, historic memorials and public art reflect the town’s cultural history. Fishing and birdwatching are possible at Jandowae Dam; there are also birdwatching trails and scenic walking tracks. This lets you decide whether to focus on cultural attractions, birdwatching or getting out into the landscape.
Cultural history and public art
Athlone Cottage, at the corner of High Street and Dalby Street, is a slab hut originally built around 1890 and restored by volunteers. Visitors can explore the old school, the Cream Room and the shearers’ quarters on the grounds. So there is more to see than the historic cottage itself: these named areas make the grounds a tangible place to explore local history.
The Dingo Sculpture in Jandowae marks the beginning of the 5,400-kilometre Dingo Barrier Fence, the longest fence in the world. The Old Railway Station in Lions Park on High Street is Jandowae’s original railway station; the railway is no longer in operation. The Jandowae War Memorial on George Street commemorates locals who enlisted in the First World War. Together, a fence, railway history and remembrance of war represent different historical connections.
The Painted Power Pole Walk adds public art to the town’s architecture and memorials. Graeme McCullough’s colourful works tell stories of the community, history and industry of the town. Visitors more interested in art than buildings or monuments will find a different cultural focus here.
Nature at Jandowae Dam and walking tracks
The banks of Jandowae Dam are surrounded by native vegetation. In addition to fishing and birdwatching, swimming is listed as a recreational option; check before your visit whether it is possible under the conditions in effect at the time. Camping and motorised watercraft are not permitted at the Dam. Check current recreational conditions before you travel.
Jandowae has birdwatching trails where visitors can observe native species in their natural habitat. Scenic walking tracks offer a different focus: the bird trails centre on observing species, while the walking tracks focus on the character of the landscape. This distinction can help you choose activities to suit your interests.
Timber Town Festival
The Timber Town Festival celebrates Jandowae’s rich timber heritage and includes activities and entertainment. It offers an event-based way to explore this theme, while Athlone Cottage and the artworks provide other cultural points of interest.
