Camdale: Beach and Golf
Accommodation in Camdale
You can consider Camdale through two distinct interests when planning your trip: the coast and golf. Camdale Beach begins at the mouth of the Cam River, while golf is the focus at Burnie Golf Club. If you’re looking for a hotel for a stay in Camdale, you can first consider whether the beach, golf or both should be the main focus of your trip.
Coast and river mouth
Camdale Beach begins at the reef point on the eastern edge of the Cam River’s 50-metre-wide mouth. The beach first emerges in the shelter of the reef, then extends 1.4 kilometres east to another reef-bound projection. The 50 metres describes the cross-section of the river mouth, while the 1.4 kilometres describes the stretch along the coast. Together, these measurements show a narrow river-mouth area and a considerably longer stretch of beach to the east.
A 2011 municipal study described fishing on the west bank of the Cam River mouth as apparently popular. Camdale Beach, by contrast, begins on the eastern edge of the mouth. This places the start of the beach and the fishing reference on different sides of the river mouth.
Getting your bearings around Camdale Point
Camdale Point offers travellers on the Bass Highway a few views of the water. As vegetation and visibility can change, you shouldn’t count on these views being a constant feature of the drive. A footpath and steps connect Camdale Point with Scarfe Street in Camdale. Check local conditions if you want to use this connection. The view from the Bass Highway and the connection to Scarfe Street provide different points of reference: one offers water views along the drive, and the other is a named walking route.
A 2011 municipal study noted that people walk along the shore towards Cooee from the eastern end of the beach near Camdale Point. Cooee is the direction of travel along the shore, while the footpath and steps lead to Scarfe Street.
A 2011 municipal study suggested that penguins use the coastal scrub around Camdale Point for their nesting burrows.
Golf and swimming
Burnie Golf Club in Camdale has a 9-hole, par-72 course. The club holds weekly competitions and social golf, and welcomes visitors. The course details describe its format and par, while the competitions and social golf refer to the club’s activities. This lets you distinguish information about the golf course from information about club life.
Burnie City Council lists Camdale Beach among Burnie’s best public swimming beaches in its tourism information. This classification should be distinguished from the current service status: Surf Life Saving Australia does not currently provide services at Camdale Beach. Check the current status before swimming, as services may change.
