Legana is of interest to travelers who want to plan their days around specific places. Local highlights include the Tamar Island Wetlands, wine tastings, and a range of recreational and sports facilities. If you’re looking for a hotel in Legana, you can choose where to stay based on which of these highlights best suit your itinerary.

Location and orientation

Legana is at the southern end of the Tamar Valley, 12 kilometers northwest of Launceston. The drive takes 15 minutes; traffic and road conditions may affect travel time. This gives you a sense of Legana’s location in relation to Launceston without assuming a fixed arrival time.

Wetlands and birdwatching

The Tamar Island Wetlands on the edge of Legana cover 60 hectares of mudflats, lagoons, and islands with diverse plant and animal life. The Tamar Valley Wetlands Centre, also on the edge of Legana, has a 500-meter boardwalk through estuarine wetlands to a birdwatching platform. The landscape and boardwalk offer different ways to experience the natural setting: the expansive wetland and a specific route through the estuary.

From July 6 to December 17, 2026, part of the path through the Tamar Island Wetlands will be closed while two bridges and a section of the path are replaced. The Tamar Island Wetlands Centre and the path to the birdwatching platform will remain open. Check current path conditions before visiting during this period.

Wine tasting and dining

The Bellebonne at Evenfall cellar door is located at 2 Upper McEwans Rd, Legana. Wine tastings and wine sales are available there Wednesday through Sunday, from 10:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Check the opening hours before you go.

Timbre is a place to eat and drink in Legana. Its food and drinks menus are continually evolving and supported by a local community of diners, producers, and gardeners. Menus and programs may change. The two venues offer different kinds of visits: wine tasting and sales at Bellebonne during stated opening hours, and food and drinks at Timbre with evolving menus.

Recreation and sports facilities

The facilities at local recreation spots vary. Tanner Drive Reserve has a fenced off-leash area for dogs and two swings. Jelisa Court Playground has a bike path, picnic tables, a slide, and two swings. Orchards Estate Playground offers nature play, opportunities for ball sports, slides, and a flying fox. These differences can help you choose a spot based on the facilities you’re looking for.

The two cricket grounds also have different settings: Legana Recreation Youth Space is a recreation and leisure area that includes a cricket ground. Legana Sports Oval is a full-sized sports oval and also has a cricket ground.

For Legana Sports Oval, the municipal policy published in February 2025 distinguishes between school hours: the oval may be used by the school community during school hours and by the wider community outside those hours. If you’re planning an organized activity, confirm the current access arrangements in advance.
