Accommodation in Port Huon
River Views and Harbour Heritage
Port Huon brings together expansive scenery, a maritime past and several specific opportunities to get active. From Port Huon, you can enjoy views of the Huon River, Bruny Island, the D’Entrecasteaux Channel and the Hartz Mountains. The river, island, channel and mountains provide distinct landscape features in the panorama. You can combine the scenery with the area’s harbour heritage, the walking track along the Kermandie River, or the sports and swimming facilities. When planning your trip, you can choose not only from scenic views but also from specific routes and activities in town.
Port Huon was once a busy trading port and a destination for international apple ships, which carried and exported the region’s famous fruit around the world. The original port is still there and is now used by boats belonging to salmon producer Huon Aquaculture. These boats are not open to the public. The historic port and its present-day use represent two distinct periods: the former apple trade and the current use of Huon Aquaculture’s boats.
Walking Track and Sports Facilities
The Port Huon to Geeveston Walking Track starts in Port Huon, is 3 km long and passes through natural habitat along the Kermandie River. It connects to a 500-metre-long boardwalk that crosses wetlands to the Port Huon Sports and Aquatic Centre. The route therefore passes through two consecutive sections, first alongside the river and then through wetlands; the boardwalk leads to the Centre. If you’re planning a walk, the distances and change of scenery offer specific points to consider. The track is six times as long as the connecting boardwalk.
The Centre offers facilities for volleyball, netball, basketball and badminton, as well as a 25-metre indoor swimming pool. Swimming lessons and swimming classes for adults are also available. The indoor pool complements the ball sports facilities; as well as learn-to-swim lessons, there are swimming classes for adults. Programmes and individual facility details may vary. If you’re planning a specific class or visit, check the latest information beforehand.
