Discover Westerway
Accommodation in Westerway
Westerway lies on the banks of the Tyenna River and brings together riverside scenery, berry growing and the history of Westerway Station. For a trip to Tasmania, the town offers a range of interests: fly fishing on the river, access to the waterfalls and alpine lakes of Mount Field National Park, seasonal berry picking and local railway history. If you’re looking for a hotel for your trip, you can get a sense of Westerway through these natural and heritage themes.
River and nature around Westerway
The Tyenna River is one of Tasmania’s best trout rivers. Fly fishing in the river is an activity associated with Westerway; regulations and seasonal conditions may vary. Take these factors into account when planning your trip. Westerway also provides access to the waterfalls and alpine lakes of Mount Field National Park. Check road and park conditions before you travel. The farm adds an agricultural aspect to the riverside setting: Westerway Raspberry Farm is located on the fertile floodplains of the Tyenna River. In Westerway, both fishing in the river and using the floodplain location for berry growing are therefore connected to the Tyenna River.
The history of Westerway Station
Westerway Station is listed on the Tasmanian Heritage Register. R H Stabb and Son built it in 1909; it was called Russell until 1919. William Henry Westerway is also part of the local tourism history: he built an inn opposite the station and took its guests to Russell Falls. The station, inn and tours to the waterfalls are thus historically connected. The railway station’s history can also be understood through two specific dates: the year it was built and the period when it was known as Russell.
Berry farm and seasonal produce
Raspberries were first grown on the old hop fields in Westerway in 1995. In summer and autumn, visitors can pick heritage varieties of berries at Westerway Raspberry Farm. As this is a seasonal offering, it’s advisable to check current fruit availability before travelling. The farm shop offers pre-picked berries, jams, juices, berry beers, ice cream and espresso coffee. Product availability varies by season. Before visiting, also check current opening hours and whether the farm is open for the season.
Match your travel dates to your interests
There are different factors to consider when choosing when to travel: berry picking is associated with summer and autumn, while seasonal conditions and regulations may affect fly fishing. The station adds a historical dimension to these activities, reflected in the year it was built, its former name and the tours to Russell Falls. If you’re looking for a hotel in Westerway, you can consider whether your travel dates are especially important for a seasonal activity or whether you’d prefer to explore the town through its natural and railway history.
