White Beach is a curved sandy beach on Wedge Bay. The main beach is 2.1 kilometres long and faces west; along its shore are the bay’s crystal-clear, turquoise waters. Its shape, length and direction give the destination a distinct coastal character. Choosing White Beach for a stay gives you a sense of the landscape: a long, curved stretch of sand facing west. The coastline may change over time.

Beach Shape and Orientation

At its southern end, White Beach is bounded by the mouth of Cripps Creek and its sandbanks. A low rocky outcrop marks the northern boundary. White Beach (N), a separate 50-metre stretch of sand, is also at the northern end. It faces south, making its orientation different from that of the main beach, which faces west. This means there are two distinct lengths to note: White Beach, at 2.1 kilometres, and the short northern section, at 50 metres. The “(N)” suffix helps distinguish this section from White Beach as a whole. The creek mouth and sandbanks to the south, and the rocky outcrop to the north, provide further specific landmarks at either end of the beach.

Views across Storm Bay

From White Beach, the view extends west across Storm Bay. On clear days, Hobart and Kunanyi / Mount Wellington can be seen. The west-facing aspect describes the beach’s location, while the two places named here specify the distant view in clear conditions. This distinction is useful for travellers who factor scenery and views into their choice of destination. Storm Bay lies in the direction of the view, while views of Hobart and Kunanyi / Mount Wellington are specifically dependent on clear days. The view therefore combines a fixed compass direction with a distant outlook whose visibility depends on conditions.

Peace and time of year

White Beach is considered family-friendly and is almost always quiet. Weather and season can affect conditions, so this general description may not apply equally to every single day. If you are considering White Beach for a family trip, you can take both into account: the beach’s almost-always-quiet character and seasonal and weather-related variations. The word “almost” allows for possible exceptions. This assessment describes the beach in general, not an unchanging condition for every visit.

A cultural point of interest

White Beach is also home to the Pear Shed Gallery, an artists’ cooperative at 45 Parsons Bay Road. It is another specific point of interest alongside the beach and coastal landscape, adding a cultural aspect to your travel plans. If you are planning a visit, please check in advance whether the Gallery is open before relying on its opening hours. This lets you include the venue in your plans separately from the beach itself.
