Australind brings together waterscapes, trails and history. If you’re looking for a hotel in Australind, these themes can help you decide what you’d like to focus on during your stay: nature and wildlife, getting active or heritage. Leschenault Peninsula, Australind Jetty, various routes and local memorials offer concrete starting points for planning your trip. The routes vary in length, as well as in whether the focus is on a loop, a named starting point or the route between two places.

Waterscapes and wildlife

Leschenault Peninsula in Australind separates the mouth of the Collie River from the Indian Ocean. Swimming and snorkelling are popular activities on the peninsula. More than 60 bird species have also been recorded there, between the beach and the forest. The information about the bird species adds a wildlife dimension to the description of the peninsula, spanning two distinct habitats. This places water activities and an interest in birdlife alongside each other as different nature-based themes.

Australind Jetty is also a prominent waterside landmark: it extends about one kilometre over the protected waters of Leschenault Estuary (Derbal Elaap). Leschenault Waterways Eco Museum, also known as the Discovery Centre, is located on the foreshore. Visitors can learn about the estuary’s surroundings and local plants and animals there. The combination of protected waters and information about local nature gives your trip planning a different focus from the activities on Leschenault Peninsula.

Compare walks and routes

The Leschenault Inlet Walk has a set loop and distance: it is five kilometres long and goes around Leschenault Inlet. The Australind Jetty Walk is listed as 1.1 kilometres; the return walk is 2.2 kilometres. This lets you compare the two walks by distance: the loop is longer than the return walk on the Jetty Walk, where the figures distinguish between the one-way and total distances.

The measurements for the jetty itself and its associated walk are also different: about one kilometre refers to Australind Jetty, which extends over the protected waters; the walk is listed as 1.1 or 2.2 kilometres. Another named reference point is the start of the Leschenault Heritage Drive Trail at the Heart and Home statue on Old Coast Road in Australind.

The Eaton–Australind Historic Trail offers a different kind of route. It is a combined walking and cycling trail, runs between Eaton and Australind, and follows the banks of the Collie River and Leschenault Estuary. When planning, you can distinguish between a loop, a walk with a return route, a trail with a designated starting point, and a route for walking and cycling.

Local history and heritage

Australind Memorial commemorates the first European settlers, who arrived in the area in 1840. The year places the memorial within the area’s early European settlement history. In 2025, Heritage Trail signs were installed in Australind and Leschenault. The signs are designed to offer visitors and members of the local community a historical walk through time.

Another heritage site is Saint Nicholas Anglican Heritage Church in Australind. It is a state-heritage-listed pioneer church made of jarrah. Together with the memorial and Heritage Trail signs, it offers access to local history in different forms: a memorial, a heritage-listed church and signs for a historical walk. These sites provide a different focus from the waterscapes and trails.

Another point to consider when planning

Karragarup Play Space at Ridley Place Foreshore in Australind includes, among other features, a mangrove-tree maze. This particular feature may interest you if a play area is one of the themes you’re considering in your plans. The Eco Museum, by contrast, focuses on the natural environment, including the estuary, plants and animals. Both places add to the range of themes to choose from, without requiring you to limit your trip to a single focus.

Use the different information about trails, landscapes and heritage to organise your interests for your stay.
