Explore Benger through several themes: Benger Swamp Nature Reserve to the west, the history of White Rocks Farm and an easy cycling route through dairy country. When looking for hotels in Benger, choose your focus according to whether you’re interested in wetlands and birdlife, rural history or a cycling trip. Events at Sheron Farm are another consideration, so check their dates when planning your trip.

Wetland and Birdlife

Benger Swamp Nature Reserve lies west of Benger and is a significant wetland. It is managed by Parks & Wildlife; management details may change. The reserve provides habitat for the endangered Australasian Bittern. It is also one of only seven known breeding sites for the Freckled Duck in south-western Australia.

The reserve has no facilities or information signs. Visitor information may change, so check the latest advice before setting out. This will help you plan for the actual visitor conditions rather than assume there are facilities or signs on site.

Benger Swamp, west of Benger, has considerable historical significance in relation to agricultural development and potato growing. During the war, the Australian Army took the entire potato crop from the swamp area. This history adds another dimension to the wetland, highlighting its importance to the region’s agriculture.

Farm History and Architecture

White Rocks Farm is one of the oldest farming properties in south-western Australia and is still operated by the same family. John Partridge established the farm in 1887 on 400 acres of land he bought from Edward Clifton. It has operated as a dairy farm since at least 1894. The Partridge family produces White Rock Veal and operates a dairy.

White Rocks Farm is home to the Cottage Museum. It includes a classroom relocated from the former Brunswick School, butter churns and cheese-making equipment. Museum visits are by appointment. White Rocks Farm is a private residence; visits for heritage and school groups are by appointment only. Check in advance to see if a visit is possible.

Another architectural point of interest is the house at Shenfield Farm. Built in 1894, it was designed by Sir Russell Hobbs in the Federation bungalow style. The house is made of brick, has an iron roof and verandas that wrap around the main building. These features offer specific points of reference if you’re interested in the construction and design of historic farmhouses.

Cycling and Farm Events

The Hills & Happy Cows Cycling Trail runs through Benger’s dairy country, with an easy cycling section passing through Benger. Check route conditions before setting out. The cycling route offers a different focus from the reserve’s birdlife or the historic farms: it connects the agricultural landscape with a cycling trip.

Sheron Farm holds an annual bull sale, usually in February. It also hosts an annual Farm Open Day, where visitors can explore the property and learn about Angus cattle breeding. If you’d like to plan your trip around either event, confirm the dates in advance.
