Youngs Siding brings together historical landmarks, cycling routes, perspectives on the landscape and surf history. The town’s history leads to the Torbay Line and Young’s Siding Hall; the routes each relate to the town differently: one tour starts here, while another reaches Youngs Siding. Lowlands Beach and the Surf Gallery add geological, cultural and sporting-history themes to the picture. When planning your trip, it is worth keeping these different connections to the town in mind.

Local History and Young’s Siding Hall

Youngs Siding was originally developed as a railway junction on the Torbay Line between Albany and Denmark. The railway line is therefore a prominent landmark in the town’s history. Another historical highlight is Young’s Siding Hall, which was officially opened on Saturday, 14 April 1923. Since its opening, it has held cultural and historical significance as an important social, cultural and recreational hub for the local community. Its history therefore encompasses both a precisely dated event and a longstanding role in community life.

Cycling Routes: Start and Finish

The cycling tour through the Nullaki Wilderness starts in Youngs Siding on Lower Denmark Road and travels through the Nullaki Wilderness Reserve to Anvil Beach. Another tour, “Long Circuit for the Young at Heart,” reaches Youngs Siding via Lower Denmark Road. This distinction is useful for orientation: Youngs Siding is the starting point for the Nullaki tour, while it is a place reached along the Long Circuit. Both tours refer to Lower Denmark Road, but in different ways in their route descriptions.

Along the Nullaki Wilderness cycling route beside the inlet, cyclists can often spot sea eagles and other waterbirds. Thus, the described experiences on this tour include possible bird sightings, as well as the route through the reserve and the destination of Anvil Beach. A sighting is not guaranteed; the information indicates that birds can often be observed.

Lowlands Beach: Geological and Cultural Perspectives

The Denmark Environment Centre’s Six Seasons project features Lowlands Beach near Youngs Siding in a presentation about the geological history of the area. The content on Lowlands Beach also offers insights into natural science and cultural tradition. Geology draws attention to the history of the landscape, while cultural tradition offers another perspective on the place. Those interested in these topics can therefore get more than a single perspective on the coast: landscape history and cultural interpretation sit side by side.

Surf History at the Surf Gallery

The Surf Gallery in Youngs Siding presents a journey through the history of surfing, from its early Polynesian beginnings to the present day. The “Evolution of the Surfboard” exhibition is a curated collection of surfboards, skateboards, photographs and memorabilia. It thus offers different kinds of exhibits related to surf history. A viewing window into Wayne’s workshop gives visitors the chance, with a little luck, to see him at work. Check the Surf Gallery’s current visiting arrangements before travelling there.

Production and Finding Hotels

At Eden Gate Estate in Youngs Siding, blueberries and microgreens are produced, along with products made from them for various markets. Product lines may change. This adds agricultural production and processing to the local themes, without implying that the estate offers visitor experiences.
