Visitors to Dongara can trace the town’s history through its surviving built fabric and individual historic buildings. The Irwin River and the nearby river mouth offer further opportunities for walks and birdwatching. You can shape your stay around different themes: heritage in the town area, a riverside trail, or the maritime history of the surrounding area.

Dongara’s Town History and Historic Buildings

The town area of Dongara is a relatively intact example of a settlement. Its surviving built fabric illustrates its development from the mid-1850s to 2012. The elements throughout the town area, individually and collectively, show the way of life associated with the establishment and continued existence of a small regional town centre since the 1850s. Together, they form a significant cultural landscape. The town’s history can therefore be understood not only through individual buildings, but also through their contribution to the historic streetscape.

Russ Cottage, built around 1869, is a specific point of reference in the town’s history. The Irwin District Museum is housed in the former Dongara Police Station, Courthouse and Gaol. This building was the first police station built in Dongara. The Old Police Station Museum is open to visitors Monday to Saturday, from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm. Check the opening hours before your visit if you plan to stop here.

Maritime History in the Surrounding Area

Nearby Port Denison offers further insights into the history of the town and seafaring. The Packout Room Museum features exhibits on the history of fishing, seafaring, and Port Denison. The old Port Denison Jetty was built in 1867; its ruins are also among the area’s historic points of interest. The Fishermen’s Memorial Lookout and an obelisk were erected in memory of all fishers who lost their lives at sea. The museum, jetty ruins, and memorial sites each offer a different perspective: exhibits, built history, and remembrance of the fishers.

Irwin River, River Mouth, and Birdwatching

The Thungara Trail 3 – Irwin Heritage River Nature Trail is a 4.6-kilometre loop and riverside walk starting from the centre of historic Dongara. It begins at the Irwin River Lookout. At the river and its mouth, you can spot black swans, pelicans, and many other bird species native to the area. The trail connects a specific walking route with the natural environment, which also plays a part in Dongara’s history.

Nearby, the Irwin River Mouth Boardwalk on Ocean Drive invites you to take a walk with views of the Irwin River mouth. You can spot waterbirds such as pelicans, ducks, terns, herons, egrets, and cormorants. These two natural attractions offer different experiences: the trail is a 4.6-kilometre loop along the river, while the boardwalk focuses on views of the mouth and the waterbirds found there.

Seasonal Cinema

Another option in the area is the Dongara Denison Drive In. From September to May, it screens new and classic films during school holidays and long weekends. As the programme is limited to these periods and dates may vary, check the current programme before planning your visit.
