Mount Helena: Railway Trail and Local History
Accommodation in Mount Helena
Railway Reserves Heritage Trail
The Railway Reserves Heritage Trail follows the route of the old Eastern Railway for 59 kilometres. The railway connected Fremantle with York in the late 1880s. At Mount Helena, the trail forms a 41-kilometre loop. The two figures refer to different scales: 59 kilometres describes the trail route, while 41 kilometres describes the loop at Mount Helena. This distinction helps you tell the historic rail connection apart from the local loop, rather than reading both figures as referring to the same route length.
The trail is free to access and suitable for walking and cycling. Dogs are welcome on a leash; horse riding is possible outside national parks. If you are travelling with a dog, the leash requirement is an essential part of planning your route. For horse riders, the boundary of national parks is the key consideration.
Heritage Walk and Local History
The Mount Helena Heritage Walk has a different focus: it takes you to Mount Helena’s historic and surviving buildings and starts and finishes at Pioneer Park. Route details may change; check the current route before your walk.
The two walks appeal to different interests: the Railway Reserves Heritage Trail focuses on the rail route and is suitable for walking or cycling, while the Heritage Walk visits historic local buildings and starts and finishes at Pioneer Park. Choose based on whether you would rather explore the railway line or the town’s history.
The Mt Helena Tavern is of very high aesthetic, social and historical significance to the Mount Helena community and the Shire of Mundaring. The original weatherboard Mt Helena (Lion Mill) Hotel was completed in September 1902; its original design included verandas and French doors. To appreciate its historic architecture, you can consider the materials and exterior design together, while the completion date places its construction in time.
The historic railway connection and the building’s history can also be distinguished chronologically: the Eastern Railway connected Fremantle and York in the late 1880s; the original Mt Helena (Lion Mill) Hotel was completed in September 1902.
