Discover Rockingham City: beach, nature and culture
Accommodation in Rockingham City
Rockingham City combines a strong coastal focus with natural and cultural attractions. At Rockingham Beach, the foreshore, beach and water sports take centre stage; at Lake Richmond, bushland, thrombolites and birdlife define the natural landscape. Museums, art and a maritime memorial add their own cultural highlights. You can tailor your stay to the things that interest you most: the beach, nature or history.
Rockingham Beach: foreshore, beach and events
The Rockingham Foreshore overlooks Rockingham Beach, a safe and calm beach that is especially well suited to families. For much of the year, Rockingham Beach offers sheltered swimming conditions, as well as opportunities for water sports and other water-based recreation. Beach experiences also include coastal scenery, encounters with marine animals and adventure activities.
The Rockingham Beach Foreshore includes the accessible “Lookout” and a “Beach Bowl”. In the heart of Rockingham is Beach Plaza, a flexible event venue for up to 700 people. It can host a year-round programme of events, including craft markets, farmers’ markets, concerts, films, Christmas carols and street performer shows.
Lake Richmond and its natural environment
Lake Richmond is a freshwater lake surrounded by 77.86 hectares of bushland. A jetty at the lake offers views of a threatened thrombolite community that extends over three hectares. The Anne Mueller Environmental Walk is an easy, three-kilometre loop around Lake Richmond, rich in birdlife. The circuit provides a clearly defined walking route, while the jetty offers a dedicated vantage point for viewing the thrombolites.
Art, history and maritime remembrance
Rockingham Arts Centre offers a year-round programme of exhibitions and events. Its offerings include professionally curated exhibitions, workshops and development programmes led by industry professionals. The programme spans everything from exhibitions to workshops and development programmes.
Rockingham Museum preserves and shares the district’s history through exhibitions, artefacts and community collections. The building was constructed in 1946 as the Rockingham Roads Board office and served as the district’s civic centre; its original Art Deco style has been preserved. A visit to the museum therefore connects the district’s history with the building that houses it.
Naval Memorial Park is home to a memorial walkway honouring the men and women of the naval service who served their country. The park also includes the conning tower of the submarine HMAS Orion.
Further context: City of Rockingham
Across the wider destination of the City of Rockingham, the coastline stretches for 37 kilometres. The sheltered Shoalwater Islands Marine Park is home to dolphins, seals, penguins and pelicans; Cape Peron offers coastal views across the marine park. The Shoalwater Islands Marine Park Paddle is also part of the wider destination: it is an eight-kilometre kayak trail along the Rockingham coast. These regional highlights complement local themes such as Rockingham Beach, Lake Richmond, art and history with a broader perspective on the coast, wildlife and paddling.
