Wyndham combines maritime history with striking landmarks and views of rivers that flow into Cambridge Gulf. When choosing a destination, you may want to consider whether you are most interested in its port history, cultural depictions or landscapes.

Maritime activities and history

Anthon's Landing in Wyndham is a very popular spot for boating, fishing and other recreational activities. Conditions for maritime access can change; check them before planning an activity.

As a World War II site, the MV Koolama has historical significance. Its story points to the impact of the war in north-west Western Australia, as well as the strategic importance of shipping and Wyndham's north-western port.

Topics covered by the Wyndham Historical Museum include the establishment and decline of the Old Port Township, the Wyndham Meatworks, early aviation, and the air raids on Wyndham during World War II, including the sinking of the MV Koolama. Specific exhibitions may change.

The MV Koolama and the museum have different points of focus: the ship represents the maritime and strategic side of wartime history, while the museum's topics broaden the perspective to include the town's development, aviation and the attacks on Wyndham.

Rivers and striking landscapes

Five Rivers Lookout offers views of Wyndham's port area and Cambridge Gulf, into which five rivers flow. From there, you can see the King, Ord, Durack, Forrest and Pentecost rivers; all five flow into Cambridge Gulf. As well as views of the port, the lookout helps you get your bearings by showing the rivers that flow into the gulf.

The Biggest Boab in Captivity stands behind the Wyndham Caravan Park. Its widest point measures approximately 25 metres. A sign beside the tree estimates its age at at least 2,000 years.

The landscape features each have a different emphasis: the lookout offers views of the port, Cambridge Gulf and the rivers, while the boab is notable for its approximate width and the age estimate on the sign.

Cultural depictions and landmarks

The Warriu Dreamtime Statues in Warriu “Dreamtime” Park depict the early life of the Aboriginal people in Wyndham 3 Mile. They show an Aboriginal family alongside a dingo, a goanna, a snake and a kangaroo. The statues are made of copper and bronze; they were first erected in 1988 and restored in 2017.

The Big Croc is a 20-metre-long and 3-metre-high concrete statue of a saltwater crocodile and offers a photo opportunity.

Wyndham as a starting or finishing point

Wyndham is a starting or finishing point for the Gibb River Road adventure. When planning your trip, you can decide whether the town should be at the beginning or end of this adventure, or whether its local history, culture and landscapes should be the main focus.
