Hiking trails, the leisure lake and the parish church offer different starting points for a stay in Mönichwald. When planning your trip, you can first decide whether you want to focus on a hike, summer days by the lake or cultural and historical topics. These priorities give you a concrete basis for tailoring your hotel search to the interests of your trip.

Hiking: Route and Directions

The Alm Circuit starts in the centre of Mönichwald, passes the leisure lake and continues to Waldbach. The return route to Mönichwald follows the well-marked hiking trail 07. The combination of starting point, lake section and return route provides guidance if you want to plan your hike around several named waypoints.

The Hochwechsel Springs Trail leads from Mönichwald in the direction of Hochwechsel; after 3 kilometres, turn left towards the Hochwechsel ski lifts. Unlike the Alm Circuit, the focus here is on following a direction and reaching a specific junction. For the Alm Circuit, by contrast, the key reference points are the start in the village centre and the return route on hiking trail 07. Trail and road conditions may change; check them before setting out.

Another point of reference is the Naturfreunde Wimpassing refuge. It is located in Mönichwald, directly on hiking trail No. 9 (907). This trail number differs from hiking trail 07, which is given as the return route for the Alm Circuit.

Leisure Lake and Flower Road

There is a beach volleyball court at Mönichwald Leisure Lake, and pedal boating is also available. On hot summer days, the lake offers guests and visitors a chance to cool off. This gives you a choice of two different activities in the same place: beach volleyball on land and a pedal boat ride. If you are weighing up hiking and activities on the water for your trip, the leisure lake is a distinct focus.

The Styrian Flower Road takes visitors to the district of Mönichwald, where the leisure lake invites you to relax. Mönichwald was one of the flower villages that founded the “Styrian Flower Road” association in 1990. The bathing season at the leisure lake is scheduled for 2026. If swimming is important for your trip, check the specific season dates in advance.

Parish Church and Art

Church history also offers concrete points of interest. A church in Mönichwald was consecrated on 17 December 1163 by Archbishop Eberhard II of Salzburg. The present-day parish church is dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul and was built in 1716. The consecration in 1163 and the year 1716 refer to different historical events. The paintings in the parish church were created by Johann Cyriak Hackhofer, a painter at Vorau Abbey, and his pupils. This cultural and historical focus brings together details about the consecration, construction and dedication with a specific artistic connection.
