Get to know Gams bei Hieflau through its many attractions: Nothklamm Gorge, geological insights at GeoDorf, and culture surrounding the Gamser Thomasnikolo. If you’re planning a hike, it’s important to check the current conditions in the gorge, as the full gorge hike is currently not possible. Other specific places to visit include GeoRama, GeoWerkstatt, ParkBad and Kaiserlindenlift, each offering something different.

Nothklamm Gorge: hike and stone ball mill

Nothklamm Gorge has a 700-metre-long trail through a ravine carved into the landscape by the Gamsbach stream. The full gorge hike is currently not possible: you can hike as far as the stone ball mill, then return along the same route. Check the trail status before your visit.

At the stone ball mill at the exit of Nothklamm Gorge, a stone is shaped entirely into a ball using hydropower. Here, you can see two different effects of water: the Gamsbach stream carved out the ravine, while the mill uses hydropower to shape a stone.

Geology at GeoDorf

GeoDorf Gams is located in the heart of the UNESCO Global Geopark Styrian Eisenwurzen. GeoRama presents periods from the region’s 250-million-year geological history. In GeoWerkstatt workshops, collected stones are cut and identified. Since 2022, geological excavation sites for children have been located along Nothklamm Gorge.

The geology exhibits therefore cover different areas of interest: GeoRama explores periods from the region’s long history, while the workshops focus on the hands-on processing and identification of collected stones. The excavation sites along the gorge add geological finds for children to these perspectives.

Thomasnikolo and parish church

The procession of the Gamser Thomasnikolo takes place on 21 December in Gams bei Hieflau. Afterwards, the celebration continues in the church square, where the village community gathers for music and culinary treats. If you’d like to plan your trip around this celebration, include 21 December in your schedule and check the event date for your travel year.

Another cultural landmark is the Church of St. Joseph, dedicated to Saint Joseph. It provides a distinct religious point of interest in Gams bei Hieflau, alongside the Thomasnikolo, which takes place on a set date.

More activities in Gams

ParkBad Gams has a 40-metre-long water slide. Kaiserlindenlift Gams has a drag lift and 750 metres of ski runs. Alongside hiking and geology, these provide specific places to enjoy water and ski activities. If you’re planning a visit, check the conditions that apply to your travel dates.

GeoPfad and getting there

Weather permitting, GeoPfad is accessible from early May to late October. Check current access conditions before your hike. You can reach GeoPfad on RegioBus route 912 from Liezen to Hieflau station. The on-call bus on route 922 stops at Gams bei Hieflau Postamt. Routes and timetables may change; check them before travelling.

The attractions offer different options for planning your trip: the Thomasnikolo takes place on a specific date in December, GeoPfad is affected by the season and weather, and at Nothklamm Gorge, the current route goes as far as the stone ball mill, with a return along the same path. These differences can help you tailor your stay to your interests and travel dates.
