Michaelerberg: Hiking Trails and Cultural Sites
Accommodation in Michaelerberg
Michaelerberg combines distinctive hiking destinations, sweeping mountain views and listed sites. When choosing a hotel, the named starting points and trail features are particularly helpful: some routes relate to the Michaelerberghaus, while others form sections of the Panorama Trail 100. The cultural sites also add a distinct dimension alongside the outdoor activities.
Mountain Setting and Views
The Michaelerberghaus is situated at 1,300 m on Michaelerberg in Moosheim and offers panoramic views of the Gröbminger Land, as well as the ridge, Stoderzinken and the Dachstein massif. From Moosheim on the Enns, a 7 km road with an elevation gain of 500 m leads up to the Michaelerberghaus. These figures refer to the road connection and should be distinguished from the statistics for individual hikes. This allows the route to the lodge and the hikes on the mountain to be considered as separate planning points.
Hiking Trails and Choosing a Route
The circular Panorama Trail 100 is about 117 km long and passes through Michaelerberg. The Michaelerberghaus is right on Long-Distance Trail 100. In the southern section, the first stage takes 5.5 hours, running from Ă–blarn via Gatschberg and Stein an der Enns to Michaelerberg. The second stage runs from Michaelerberg through the Sattental. The 5.5-hour estimate applies to the first stage, not to the total length of the Panorama Trail. This distinguishes the overall scale of the circular trail from its specific southern stages.
The route to Stiegleralm leads from the Michaelerberghaus to the alpine pasture. It is an easy family hike along a farm track suitable for pushchairs. The difficulty rating and type of trail complement each other: the former indicates the hike's level, while the latter is particularly relevant when planning with a pushchair.
The hike to Kochofen starts and ends at the Michaelerberghaus. It is 7.1 km long, with 730 m of ascent and 730 m of descent. The route passes through the forest and offers occasional steep views down into the Sattental. Above the tree line, it climbs onto a rocky ridge of Sölk marble and continues to the summit cross. Unlike the Stiegleralm route, this hike is defined by its distance, elevation gain and route to the summit cross; the alpine pasture route is distinguished by its easy family-hike rating and pushchair-friendly farm track.
Culture and Winter
The Catholic branch church of St. Michael, with the former cemetery area in Moosheim, is a protected monument in Michaelerberg-Pruggern (Michaelerberg). Moosheim Castle is also a protected monument; it is also known as Thanneck or Thonegg.
The toboggan run on Michaelerberg is currently closed. It starts at the Michaelerberghaus and initially follows 3 km of groomed forest road in the direction of Kochofen; it then descends through the forest on natural snow. The run is unlit and has no uphill transport. If you are considering it for a later date, check its opening status before planning.
