Stainach: Routes, Culture and History
Accommodation in Stainach
Stainach offers a variety of destinations for a stay: the Stainach Circuit runs near the Enns, the circular route to the Wasserplatz follows the Leistenbach to its mouth, and the town wall is a listed monument. There are also routes to PĂĽrgg and seasonal swimming facilities. When planning, the routes differ mainly in their course and destination; the season also matters if you plan to visit the Erlebnisbad.
Getting There and Starting Points
RegioBus routes 901, 940, 941 and 950 operate in the municipality of Stainach-PĂĽrgg and the surrounding area. If you arrive by train, you can start the Stainach Circuit directly at the rear exit of Stainach-Irdning station. Free parking, including Park&Ride, is available at the starting point or directly at Stainach station. If you are planning to take a bus for a visit on a particular day, check the current timetable before setting off.
Routes along the Enns and Leistenbach
The Stainach Circuit is a flat route near the Enns. Along the way, there are views across meadows, while the Grimming is a constant companion. This gives the circuit a scenic focus. The circular route to the Wasserplatz on the Enns takes a different course: it starts and ends at the Stainach sports ground, follows the small Leistenbach to the Enns and reaches the Natur.Kraft.Platz “Wasserplatz an der Enns” at the stream’s mouth. A flat route near the Enns and a named destination at the stream’s mouth thus offer two distinct route ideas.
The circular tour to Pürgg starts at Stainach-Irdning station and passes through several districts of the municipality of Stainach-Pürgg, from Stainach to the small village of Pürgg. Two other routes lead to different destinations: “Großes Gindlhorn und Leistenalm” follows a forest road to Pürgg, through the village and past the swimming pool; it then climbs the Himmelsleiter to the Gindlhorn. The “Spechtensee über Leistenalm & Sinirböden” route passes over the Leistenalm and Leistensattel to Spechtensee. The return route goes through the forest and across the Sinirböden to Stainach. The named places and sections show how the tours can be planned differently according to their destination and course.
Culture and History
The town wall in Stainach is a listed monument. Unterstainach is also part of the area’s historical story: it developed into the castle from the 18th century that still stands today. Schloss Trautenfels offers another focus on the history, culture and nature of the Liezen district. Its permanent exhibition explores the natural and cultural history of the Styrian Enns Valley, the Paltental valley and the Ausseerland region. To get to the castle, take RegioBus route 940 or 941 from Stainach-Irdning station to the Trautenfels Schloss stop; from there, it is a five-minute walk. These cultural destinations can be distinguished by their themes, from a protected building in Stainach to an exhibition covering several regions.
Swimming in Season
The Erlebnisbad Stainach is an adventure and family swimming pool that operates seasonally. The 2026 swimming season ended on 30 August 2026. There are two swimming pools in Stainach and PĂĽrgg; the swimming facilities also include a viewing terrace overlooking the Grimming. If swimming is part of your stay, bear in mind the seasonal opening and check the information for your intended season.
