Discover Strimitzen: Landscape, History and Winter
Accommodation in Strimitzen
Strimitzen lies opposite Öblarn on the steep south-eastern slope of Mitterberg. There are several points of interest to consider when planning a trip: the network of routes in the Mitterberg-Sankt Martin activity arena, nearby Schloss Gstatt and the snow-dependent Ennsloipe Öblarn-Niederöblarn, which is accessed by car via Strimitzen. If you are looking for a hotel, these highlights can help you plan your stay around hiking and running, local history or a seasonal cross-country skiing option.
Trails, mountain views and photo spots
The Mitterberg-Sankt Martin activity arena comprises 14 different marked hiking, running and Nordic walking routes, covering a total of 70 kilometres. The 70 kilometres refer to the total length of the route network, not to a single tour. Ten so-called “mountain windows” stand along the hiking routes, framing views of mountain peaks and serving as photo spots. The activity theme thus brings together different types of routes, while the mountain windows offer hikers specific scenic viewpoints. Individual mountain windows may be undergoing maintenance or may be relocated; routes and signage can also change. So check the current route information before setting out on a specific tour.
Schloss Gstatt and local history
Schloss Gstatt is located near Strimitzen, on the border with the municipality of Ă–blarn, but still within the municipality of Mitterberg-Sankt Martin. The Baroque castle was owned by Admont Abbey for a long time. Its location on the border establishes its geographical setting, while its ownership history offers a distinct historical connection with the abbey.
The Gstatt Chapel at Gstatt 9 is south of Strimitzen. According to the Styrian monument list dated 23 June 2026, it is protected as a monument by official order under Section 3.
The name of the village itself is also documented in historical sources. Historical records give the forms “an der Strimitzz” in 1289 and “ze Strimitzen” in 1437. The name Strimitzen corresponds in form and meaning to the Slovenian word “strmica”, meaning “steep slope”. The dated spellings and the linguistic correspondence offer different perspectives on local history: a recorded form and a parallel in meaning. The word’s meaning is a linguistic reference to the location on Mitterberg’s steep south-eastern slope.
Cross-country skiing and getting there
The Ennsloipe Öblarn-Niederöblarn depends on snow conditions. It can be up to 9 kilometres long as a loop; it is also a 6.2-kilometre classic cross-country ski trail with a simple track along the Enns. The possible loop length and the length of the classic trail provide different measures for planning your route.
The Ennsloipe is accessed by car via Strimitzen; trail access points are in Öblarn by Gartenbau Thiel and in Niederöblarn at the Sportsarea. If you leave the B320 Ennstal highway at St. Martin am Grimming and drive to Öblarn, you will pass through Strimitzen. Check current traffic restrictions and snow conditions before setting out.
