Belize: Barrier Reef and Maya History
Accommodation in Belize
Belize combines a Barrier Reef that stretches the entire length of the country with a large coastal lagoon and historic places to visit. Marine landscapes and sites with Maya history offer different highlights. If you’re looking for a hotel in Belize, you can first consider what you want to focus on during your stay: the reef and its protected areas, or historic sites such as Lamanai and Bacalar Chico. The examples below show how varied nature and history experiences can be in the country.
A reef system spanning the country
The Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996. It is the largest reef complex in the Atlantic-Caribbean region and the second-largest reef system in the world; it is also the largest barrier reef in the Northern Hemisphere. The Barrier Reef stretches the entire length of Belize and forms a large lagoon along the coast. The Reserve System is a connected network of seven marine protected areas along the Barrier Reef, the shelf lagoon and the offshore atolls.
The seven protected areas are Bacalar Chico National Park and Marine Reserve, Blue Hole Natural Monument, Half Moon Caye Natural Monument, South Water Caye Marine Reserve, Glover’s Reef Marine Reserve, Laughing Bird Caye National Park and Sapodilla Cayes Marine Reserve. Together, they comprise 12 percent of the entire reef complex. The system represents all the main reef and coastal habitats and includes rare coastal forests on sandy cays. It provides a habitat for threatened marine animals, including West Indian manatees, green sea turtles, hawksbill turtles, loggerhead turtles and American crocodiles. Endemic and migratory bird species breed in the coastal forests of the cays, atolls and coastal areas. As a historic reference point for the reef’s significance, Belize marked the 10,000th anniversary of the Belize Barrier Reef on June 8, 2022.
Marine protected areas and activities
Bacalar Chico National Park encompasses coastal forests, swamps, mudflats, savannas, sinkholes and lagoons. The Bacalar Chico Marine Reserve is suitable for snorkeling and diving. Bacalar Chico was once an important Maya trading post, so nature and history come together at this one location. Bacalar Chico is accessible only by boat, usually from San Pedro or Caye Caulker. Check local arrangements before your trip.
Laughing Bird Caye National Park is also suitable for snorkeling and diving. Marine conditions and access can vary there. Thus, two of the named protected areas offer the same activities, but their practical details differ: for Bacalar Chico, the boat journey and usual departure points are described, while conditions at Laughing Bird Caye National Park can change. If you’re making marine experiences the focus of your trip, you can take these differences into account when planning.
Historic sites and practical guidance
Lamanai is an archaeological site open daily from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., including Sundays, public holidays and bank holidays. Check the current official ticket page before your trip. Xunantunich has another specific visitor detail to consider: a hand-cranked ferry crosses the Mopan River to Xunantunich. The practical considerations therefore differ between the two sites: at Lamanai, the daily opening hours are important; at Xunantunich, it’s the river crossing.
Choose the focus of your stay
When choosing a hotel in Belize, you can start with your interests: the extensive reef system and marine protected areas, snorkeling and diving, or historic destinations such as Lamanai and Bacalar Chico. The visitor arrangements differ from place to place. Lamanai has daily opening hours, while Bacalar Chico is accessible only by boat; access and marine conditions at Laughing Bird Caye can change. If you decide on the focus of your trip first, you can then factor these specific differences into your plans.
