Ognyanovo: Mineral Water, Culture and Routes
Accommodation in Ognyanovo
Ognyanovo lies in the Mesta Valley and on the western slopes of the Dabrash section of the Rhodopes. The village is a balneological centre; cycling and hiking routes, as well as cultural history, complement its focus on thermal waters. If you are looking for a hotel in Ognyanovo, you can plan your trip according to whether mineral baths, an excursion or historic sites are your priority.
Mineral Water and Municipal Bath
The thermal water source in Ognyanovo comprises seven natural springs and two additional boreholes. The mineral water is hyperthermal, with a temperature of 40 °C. Other key figures include a pH of 9.3 and a total mineralisation of 0.27 g/l. The facility’s amenities may change over time; check the current configuration before your visit. This helps distinguish the general information about the mineral water from the specific facilities at the municipal bath when planning your visit.

Church and Roman Heritage
The Church of the Dormition of the Mother of God in Ognyanovo is a three-aisled pseudo-basilica set below ground level. “Three-aisled” describes the division of the church interior; its sunken position is another feature of its design. The church was painted by Dimitar Molerov in the 19th century.
The church’s traditional patronal feast is a two-day celebration around 15 August, featuring concerts and wrestling matches. The programme may vary from year to year. If you want to plan your trip around the feast, check the dates before booking.
Remains of an ancient Roman fortress are associated with the Ognyanovo mineral baths. Nicopolis ad Nestum is one of the few surviving ancient cities in Bulgaria and is highlighted in connection with the Rhodopes as the only surviving city from Roman times.
