Dzhigurovo is considered a semi-mountainous village and lies on a hill in the southwestern part of the Pirin Mountains. Three distinct points of interest stand out when choosing your destination: a cycling route, a plane tree with a fountain beneath it, and the village’s history. These themes complement one another but address different questions: about activity, a local attraction, and the historical background of the place.

Cycling Route and Hiking Context

The Debrene–Bozhdovo–Dzhigurovo–Debrene circuit is considered a route for cycling tourism. Its sequence of places runs from Debrene via Bozhdovo and Dzhigurovo back to Debrene. Dzhigurovo is therefore part of a named circuit, not its sole point of reference. If you are choosing the village with cycling in mind, this distinction is helpful: the route’s name places it within a circuit.

For a broader hiking context, Sandanski Municipality is a starting area for several hiking trails in the Pirin Mountains, including routes to Lake Begovitsa, Spano Pole, and Lake Tevno. This connection is at the level of Sandanski Municipality, whereas the cycling circuit explicitly includes Dzhigurovo in its sequence of places. Unlike the cycling circuit, which returns to Debrene, the hiking context features several named destinations; this distinction helps you consider the activities separately when choosing a destination.

Plane Tree and Fountain

A fountain beneath Dzhigurovo’s plane tree is considered a village attraction. Before your visit, check whether water is accessible. The plane tree itself also has a dated distinction: in 2014, it was one of the ten finalists in Bulgaria’s Tree with Root competition. This gives visitors two distinct points of interest: water access at the fountain, and the tree’s historical recognition in 2014.

Place Name and History

Local tradition connects the name Dzhigurovo with Haji Gyuro and traces its development through the forms Hadzhigyurovo and Adzhigyurovo. Zigurova and Zhigurova are distinct variants: these forms appear in Ottoman tax registers from 1611 to 1617 as names for Dzhigurovo. The first explanation belongs to local tradition; the other two forms are historical register variants associated with a clearly defined period. This makes it possible to distinguish in time between a traditional account of the name’s origins and forms recorded in writing.

The old settlement is considered to have two churches: St Nedelya and St Maria. The village school was built at night in 1911, after its construction had been prohibited. The churches and school represent different historical points of reference: the old settlement on the one hand, and a specific event with a year and unusual circumstances of construction on the other. A description from December 2025 also mentions a road above the village that leads to the old church.
