Sinemorets: Veleka, Nature and Cultural History
Accommodation in Sinemorets
In Sinemorets, the Veleka River landscape, protected areas and archaeological remains come together. This opens up different options for planning your trip: you can focus on river trips, explore trails on foot or by bicycle, or learn more about the region’s history.
Boat Trips and Activities on the Veleka
Trips along the upper and lower reaches of the Veleka depart from the river pier just beyond the bridge before Sinemorets. The trip along the upper reach goes as far as Tsarskoto Kladenche, where there is a picnic shelter. Check locally whether boat trips are available and whether access is seasonal.
The Veleka is navigable for eight kilometres from its mouth to the Tsarskoto Kladenche area and is considered suitable for water tourism. You should also check local access conditions before travelling. Leisure activities in Sinemorets also include banana boat rides, jet ski rentals, horse or pony rides, other boat trips on the Veleka, and trails for hikers and cyclists. As activities may vary by season, it is advisable to check locally whether a specific activity is available.
Cycling and Hiking Trails
One specific mountain biking option is the route from Sinemorets via the Veleka estuary to Ahtopol. It is 8.2 kilometres long and takes approximately 3 hours and 30 minutes. Check the trail conditions and markings before setting out so your plans reflect the situation on the ground.
There are several eco-trails and routes in the protected area at the Veleka estuary. These include the Paleovolcanology Natural Museum Geological Path, the Veleka River Mouth–Tsarskoto Kladenche Area–Brodilovo Village Route and the Left Bank of Veleka River. For these trails, too, check local trail conditions in advance.
Protected River Landscape
Sinemorets is associated with the Veleka estuary and the nearby protected areas of Veleka Estuary and Silistar. These protected areas support rare animal and plant species. The Veleka River Mouth Protected Area covers 1,511 hectares and includes the river mouth and the lower basin within the areas of Ahtopol, Brodilovo and Sinemorets.
Rare and protected plants grow in the Veleka protected area, including the endangered yellow water lily. It is considered the only occurrence of this species in Strandzha Nature Park. The river landscape is also important for birds: the Via Pontica migratory corridor runs above the protected area, while the lower reaches of the river serve as wintering or resting grounds for birds. This brings together botanical highlights and the seasonal use of the river area by birds.
Archaeology Around Sinemorets
The fortified ruler’s residence near Sinemorets is located on a natural rise in the Veleka estuary area. It is described as the home of a Thracian ruler; the complex includes a surrounding wall and a tower. Archaeological materials indicate that it was used in the Late Hellenistic period. A local Thracian ruler connected with mining and trade in Strandzha probably lived there.
The residence is visible and accessible by car and on foot. As you drive into Sinemorets, turn left. Check local conditions before visiting.
Another archaeological site lies north of Sinemorets in Potamya Bay. Underwater surveys there found pottery from the 5th to 4th centuries BC and from the Middle Ages, as well as anchors and lead fittings from an ancient ship. These finds add to our understanding of the region’s history, which is evident not only at the residence but also underwater.
