Tsarevo brings together its connection to the harbor, local history, and distinct cultural and sporting themes. The town was formerly called Vasiliko and is first mentioned in the second half of the 12th century. In 1662, Evliya Çelebi described a harbor and a small fortress in Vasiliko, which he called “Basiliko Burgas.” The early mention of the town and the later description of the harbor and fortress are separate historical reference points.

Vasiliko: Church and Local History

One specific reference to the town’s architectural history is the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in the Vasiliko district. It was built around 1810 on the site of an older church; its present form dates from 1895. The church survived the great fire in Vasiliko at the end of the 19th century. The construction date and its present form refer to different stages: 1810 marks the church’s construction, while 1895 marks its current form. The fact that it survived the fire adds another historical reference to this architectural history.

Museum and Visitor Information

The Tsarevo Municipal Historical Museum has three exhibition floors. The archaeology and treasury rooms display artifacts spanning three millennia, as well as silver and gold finds. The museum is one of Bulgaria’s 100 National Tourist Sites and is listed there as number 8b. The exhibition themes thus range from archaeological finds to silver and gold finds. The Vasiliko Customs House is also a place to visit: it is open year-round. Check the latest visiting conditions before planning your visit.

Harbor and Geographic Orientation

The bay of Tsarevo Harbor lies between Cape Castro to the south and Cape Limnos to the north. The harbor has been designated an international port since 1995. Vessels can be berthed there year-round. If the harbor is relevant to your travel plans, check the current berthing conditions in advance. This way, the bay’s geographic location and the information about the harbor’s status can be considered as two separate points of reference.

Sports and Events

“Tsarevo Sportuva” is a recurring sports festival held in July. Its program includes a swimming marathon and the “5kmRun” race. At the 2026 edition, children at Pontona Beach took their first steps in windsurfing with instructors from XChallenge Surf. The activities described thus include swimming and running, as well as windsurfing at this particular edition.

The Summer Dog Fest had been held in Tsarevo for three consecutive years by 2026. Activities for dogs, children, and families were announced for the 2026 edition, from June 26 to 28, at the Sea Garden venue. These dates refer to the 2026 edition.

Outside the Town

There is also a distinct regional attraction in the municipality’s wider coastal visitor area: the Butamyata–Silistar geological trail lies outside the town and takes about two hours. It is therefore separate from the places and themes within the town when planning your trip. The approximate duration offers a guide to this separate activity, not to visits within Tsarevo.

When looking for hotels in Tsarevo, it helps to consider your reason for traveling alongside your travel dates. Local history and the museum appeal to different interests than a stay planned around a sports festival or a specific event date. First decide which themes matter most for your trip.
