Velika: Botanical Garden and Nature Route
Accommodation in Velika
Velika offers two distinct ways to experience nature on a trip: the private Serafimovi Botanical Garden in the village and the surrounding landscape, with its activities and nature route. To help you decide, it is useful to first choose your focus: are you especially interested in plant diversity, fishing and forest walks, or the route of a specific trail? These questions help organize the destination’s offerings and distinguish botanical interests from activities and route planning.
Botanical Diversity in Velika
The private Serafimovi Botanical Garden is located in Velika. More than 2,200 plant species are collected, cultivated, and propagated there. The collection includes succulents, citrus plants, bamboo, coffee, ornamental trees, and grasses. These examples cover different plant groups and growth forms, so the focus cannot be reduced to a single category. The three activities also describe more than the mere presence of plants: collecting concerns species diversity, while cultivation and propagation involve working with the collection. The collection continues to develop, so the number of species may change. Velika’s botanical appeal therefore centers not only on a number but on a wide-ranging plant collection.
Landscape and Trails Around Velika
The area around Velika is suitable for fishing and forest walks. The landscape includes two reservoirs, a river, and several eco-trails. These offer different starting points for planning your trip: fishing and walks describe activities, while the reservoirs, river, and eco-trails characterize the area. The bodies of water are part of the landscape, while the eco-trails provide a connection to walking routes; the route to Skoka Waterfall offers a clearly named sequence. The activities can be seen as open-ended themes for a stay, while the nature route follows a set sequence of waypoints. This lets you distinguish between general interests in nature and a specific route.
A nature route associated with Velika follows the Trionska River to Karadjov Vir, a picnic spot with a shelter, tables, and benches. From there, the trail continues for about 0.5 km to Skoka Waterfall; approximately 400 m farther on, the route enters Strandzha Nature Park beside Tisovitsa Reserve. The two distances refer to consecutive sections: the first ends at the waterfall, and the second continues to the entrance to the nature park. Karadjov Vir is the spot with picnic facilities between the river section and the waterfall, not the end of the route. For planning, it is more useful to consider this sequence than to view the two distances in isolation. Conditions on unpaved sections may vary. Check local conditions before setting out if you plan to follow the route.
