Dobrich: Nature, Parks and Culture
Accommodation in Dobrich
The Municipality of Dobrich lies in Dobrich Province on the Dobrudzha Plateau, within the Danube hilly region; the valley of the Suha Reka River runs through the city. Nature, parks, literature, art, and history offer a variety of starting points for a stay. You can shape your time in Dobrich around the subjects that interest you most: landscapes and wildlife as well as crafts, exhibitions, and the region’s musical life.
Landscape, Nature and Parks
The Dobrich Centre for Nature and Animal Protection is Bulgaria’s first licensed zoo and covers 162 decares. A description updated in 2024 lists the centre’s features as including 40-year-old trees and 40-year-old shrub vegetation. The centre’s educational programme includes the “Green School”. Alongside its zoological focus, the centre also offers nature education and learning.
The exhibition “The Nature of Dobrudzha” offers another perspective on nature. It presents Dobrudzha’s biological diversity mainly through dioramas. The landscape is therefore viewed not only in geographical terms, but also through the diversity of life depicted.
In St. George Park, separate cycling and walking paths run around a lake with water lilies. The renovated rose garden features 39 varieties of roses. Other park features include a skatepark and a zip line. This combination of paths, the rose garden, and leisure activities makes the park a distinct attraction alongside the city’s museums.
The museum in the park hosts temporary exhibitions. In spring and summer, concerts, literary readings, and children’s festivals take place in the surrounding area. If one of these events is important to your travel plans, it is advisable to check the specific dates in advance.
Literature, Crafts and History
A memorial house was added to the writer Yordan Yovkov’s house museum in 1980. It houses Bulgaria’s only permanent museum exhibition of its kind dedicated to Yovkov, as well as the largest collection of material about the writer. The memorial house also serves as a venue for temporary exhibitions, creative workshops, concerts, theatrical performances, educational games, and reenactments. Literature and changing cultural events come together here in one place.
Old Dobrich has a different focus: it presents, preserves, and develops the traditional crafts of Dobrudzha from the late 19th century and the first half of the 20th century. It also commemorates the economic, everyday, and architectural history of the former Dobrich. While the Yovkov Memorial House is dedicated to a single writer, Old Dobrich focuses on crafts and the history of the city’s former way of life.
At the Dobrich Art Gallery, you can see works by Vladimir Dimitrov–Maystora, Konstantin Shtarkelov, Dechko Uzunov, and other artists. The gallery has a rich permanent collection and an extensive exhibition calendar. For music, there is the Dobrich Concert Hall, built in 1975 and also known among locals as the “Organ Hall”. It is an important venue for musical life in Dobrich and Dobrudzha.
Another historic site is the Dobrich Military Cemetery, the largest surviving military cemetery in Bulgaria from the First World War. Together with the museums and gallery, it offers a distinct way to explore the city’s history and culture alongside its nature and parks.
