The municipality of General Toshevo comprises 42 villages; its settlements lie 40 to 70 kilometers from the Black Sea. The landscape is flat, and the climate is temperate continental. Different options are available when planning your trip: walking routes and stays at the Drian Reservoir, cultural heritage in Krasen, and collections and local traditions.

Exploring the Drian Reservoir

From the turnoff, an asphalt road runs about 3.5 kilometers to the Drian Reservoir and is suitable for a regular passenger car. A marked route several kilometers long leads to the reservoir for hikers and cyclists. There are rest areas, birdwatching hides, lakeside pavilions and barbecue areas. The area is also suitable for excursions, fishing and hunting tourism.

The Enyovden gathering is held annually at the reservoir. It showcases local folklore, traditional cuisine and the use of herbs in folk medicine. Dates may vary. Alongside the route and facilities by the water, local customs are another possible focus for your trip planning.

Rock Niches and Church History in Krasen

The rock niches near Krasen are close to the village; a road reaches the site. They are considered the only known Thracian rock-niche sanctuary in Dobrudzha to date. The Church of St. Nicholas in Krasen also offers insight into the history of the area: built in 1860, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Dobrudzha. Its bells were made in Kyiv and donated by the Russian Church. After a fire, the church was restored and reopened in 1896.

Museum and Archaeological Finds

The Historical Museum – General Toshevo has specialized departments for archaeology, ethnography, and modern and contemporary history. The museum presents its collections at three exhibition sites: in General Toshevo, Dabovik and Krasen. Organized groups wishing to visit the museum on public holidays or weekends must submit a request three days in advance. Check this requirement again before your trip.

An archaeological exhibition in the municipality featured more than 100 finds from field surveys and excavations in villages such as Izvorovo, Velikovo, Sredina, Spasovo, Kardam, Yovkovo, Ograzhden and Preselentsi. This adds archaeological finds from several villages in the municipality to the museum’s departments.

Festivals, Cuisine and Local Places of Remembrance

The 2025 cultural program included, among other events, a lavender festival, a folklore festival at the border, an artists’ plein-air event in Krasen, and a festival celebrating bread, wheat and Dobrudzha in Spasovo. Names and dates may change. Traditional dishes associated with the municipality include Riazana chorba, Trahana and white Dobrudzha beans with pork breast and liver.

In Zhiten, the “Neovyrshaniyat Harman” memorial garden is a distinctive monument set amid green spaces and parkland. Together with the cultural sites in Krasen and the museum locations, it offers further insight into the different themes you can take into account when planning your trip.

Culture in the Wider Destination

Another cultural attraction in the wider destination of Dobrich Province is in Balchik: its Ethnographic Museum presents the rural and urban culture of the Balchik region from the late 19th to the early 20th century.
