Yambol Province lies in southeastern Bulgaria and borders Turkey to the south. Cities in the province include Yambol, Straldzha, Bolyarovo and Elhovo. Archaeological sites, museums and river landscapes reveal different aspects of the region. When planning your trip, you can weigh these highlights according to the history or scenery that interests you most.
Archaeology at Kabile
The Kabile Archaeological Reserve preserves a large ancient Thracian city and is open to visitors. Many of the remains have been conserved or restored. Kabile is about seven kilometers from Yambol and offers visitors a chronological experience, from prehistory through the Thracian and Hellenistic periods and the Roman era to the early Middle Ages.
The remains on display at Kabile include Thracian fortifications, the Zaychi Vrah rock sanctuary, early Christian basilicas and Roman baths. There are also walls from a military camp, barracks, granaries and a late antique quarter. Visitor resources include a history film, 3D reconstructions and an audio-guide route. Optional talks on astronomical and biometric observations at Zaychi Vrah are also available.
A yearly sunrise ceremony in June at Zaychi Vrah is associated with the ancient Thracian sanctuary. It reconstructs a ritual dating back more than 2,000 years. Check the specific program before your visit. Kabile is next to the Trakia Motorway and has its own exit; check current traffic conditions before you travel.
Museums and Cultural History
The Ethnographic and Archaeological Museum in Elhovo has around 22,000 exhibits covering agriculture, housing, transport, hunting, fishing, clothing, textiles, traditional crafts and folk art. The collection showcases regional clothing and festivals such as weddings, Lazaruvane and Koledovuvane. It also includes 19th-century woodcarvings and icons by local masters. A dedicated archaeological hall explores the millennia-old culture of the Lower Tundzha region between the Strandzha and Sakar Mountains.
The Bezisten in Yambol dates from around 1509–1510 and is Bulgaria’s only surviving Ottoman covered market building of its kind. Today, it serves as a cultural and information center with exhibition halls on three levels. Its acoustics support a cultural program that includes concerts, theater performances and book presentations.
Near Voden, in Bolyarovo Municipality, is a medieval monastery complex dating from the 11th to the 14th century. A prayer cave lies beneath the church altar. In Straldzha, Trifon Zarezan is celebrated with a festival and competitions for white and red wines, Pelin and Rakia. Festival dates and competition categories may vary.
The Tundzha, the Dervent Heights and Nature
Boat trips in the Tundzha Valley take visitors to sights in scenic, densely vegetated areas. Floodplain forests known as “ormani” have been preserved along the river corridor. East of the Tundzha Valley lie the Dervent Heights, which are linked to the Strandzha Mountains and are suitable for short excursions and enjoying nature.
In the Lesovski Gorge of the Tundzha, between the Sakar Mountains and the Dervent Heights, the rapids and fast-flowing water at Darkaya are used for white-water descents and water slalom competitions. Dates for individual events may vary; if interested, check the schedule in advance. Water tourism in Elhovo includes a landing stage and sports boats; trips are organized on the Tundzha. Check operators and availability before traveling.
Forty-five species of wintering waterbirds have been recorded at the Malko Sharkovo Reservoir in Bolyarovo Municipality. Sixteen are listed in the Red Books of Bulgaria and Europe; numbers and seasonal sightings may vary. The Tundzha Gorge is also a protected area in Yambol Province. Archaeological sites, exhibitions and nature experiences thus offer different highlights for planning a trip.
