Haskovo Province combines diverse landscapes with traces of Thracian history and museums in Haskovo. The region includes the Maritsa Valley, the Haskovo Hills, parts of the Upper Thracian Plain, the Sakar Mountains, and the eastern Rhodopes. The mountains are relatively low and separated by protected, fertile valleys. When planning your trip, it is worth considering the landscape and cultural sites as distinct aspects of the region.

Landscape and regional orientation

These landscapes provide the setting for excursions and visits to different places in the province. Alongside the region’s natural scenery, there are museums, archaeological sites, and historic buildings. In Haskovo itself, the Regional History Museum is a key destination for cultural history. For other interests, Mineralni Bani offers mineral-water bathing and treatment, while small wineries in several towns offer tastings.

Thracian history and museums

The Alexandrovo Tomb is a Thracian monument discovered in 2000 and dating to the second half of the 4th century BC. An exact replica is located at the Museum of Thracian Art in the Eastern Rhodopes and is open to tourists; unlike the replica, the original is not accessible. This lets you explore the tomb as an archaeological subject in conjunction with a museum visit, without confusing the original with the replica.

The Haskovo Regional History Museum preserves more than 120,000 movable cultural heritage objects from prehistoric, ancient, and medieval times. Its collections also include more than 22,000 ancient and medieval coins, as well as an ethnographic collection of almost 15,000 objects. These include copper vessels, clothing, textiles, jewelry, agricultural and craft tools, and folk art objects. Collection figures may change.

The museum is in central Haskovo and is a paid attraction open year-round, visited with a guide. Accommodation, dining, and a tourist information office are nearby. For visitors particularly interested in everyday history, the Shishmanova House Museum depicts domestic activities from the 19th and early 20th centuries. The two-storey house dates from 1854 and features a Thracian architectural style characteristic of the 19th-century National Revival period. Guided tours and access for people with disabilities are available.

Archaeology, architecture, and fortresses

The nearby Uzundzhovo Church is considered Bulgaria’s largest village church. Its iconostasis, carved with Glagolitic script, is particularly distinctive. Mezek Fortress is also located in Haskovo Province: built in the 11th century, it is considered one of Bulgaria’s best-preserved medieval fortresses.

The Hisarya archaeological complex near Angel Voyvoda, in the municipality of Mineralni Bani, is a cultural monument of national significance; its ancient sanctuary is considered one of the largest in Bulgaria. The complex comprises six surveyed areas featuring a fortress and a Thracian sanctuary. The archaeological structures noted include a well-preserved northern fortress wall, a rock tomb, 17 rock niches, a large rock altar, and a Late Antique cistern. The complex also includes an early Christian single-nave church with high vaults and large windows. A rock altar and a sundial are also recorded in the surrounding area.

Mineralni Bani is 18 kilometers from Haskovo. There, hyperthermal mineral water emerges at a temperature of 54 to 59°C and is attributed with special chemical and therapeutic properties. Facilities include water treatment and balneotherapy options, including a public mineral bath and accommodation facilities offering relaxation treatments with mineral water. Check current services and access arrangements before traveling.

For exercise in Haskovo, Kenana Park has a tennis and squash complex with indoor courts, seven outdoor red clay courts, coaching, a sauna, and a pool. It is also advisable to check facility availability in advance. Those interested in wine will find small wineries around Ivaylovgrad, Tankovo, and Popovets that offer tastings. Stambolovo Merlot and varieties such as Tamjanka and Khelibar add to the regional wine selection; plan tastings in advance and check their availability.

Planning visits and routes

The road from Alexandrovo to Simeonovgrad leads to the Alexandrovo Tomb; a right-hand turn is signposted at the village exit. Check the signs and public transport before setting out. The Hisarya complex is free to visit; guided tours can be arranged by contacting the municipality of Mineralni Bani in advance. Access is via a paved road to Angel Voyvoda, followed by an unpaved road suitable for vehicles with high ground clearance. Alternatively, an eco-trail leads from Sarnitsa through the Five Fountains area. Check road and trail conditions before your visit.

There are no accommodation options or fast-food restaurants in the immediate vicinity of the Hisarya complex; the nearest such facilities are in Mineralni Bani, 15 kilometers away. This distance refers to the complex and should be distinguished from the distance of Mineralni Bani from Haskovo, given as 18 kilometers. When choosing a hotel, it helps to first decide which places and experiences you want to focus on during your trip, and take into account the routes from your planned accommodation to those destinations.
