Dobrovo is one of the northern settlements in the Boboshevo Important Bird Area. This provides a direct connection to nature when choosing a destination. The wider Boboshevo destination adds its own landscape and cultural themes, which you can consider separately when planning your trip.

Landscape in the wider Boboshevo destination

Boboshevo Municipality includes part of the Rila Mountains, the northern slopes of the Ruen Mountains and a section of the Struma tectonic valley. The Struma is the municipality’s main waterway. The southern edge of the Konjavska Mountains is locally known there as Pogled Mountain. More than half of the lower section of the Struma’s Skrinski Gorge lies within the municipality. These geographical names frame the region in terms of mountains, valley and river, without equating Dobrovo with the characteristics of the municipality as a whole.

Designated natural areas are also part of the wider Boboshevo destination. The protected area “Locality of the Woolly Milk-vetch – Boboshevo,” in the land area of the town of Boboshevo, protects the population of the woolly milk-vetch (Astragalus dasyanthus Pall.) and its habitat; it was designated in 2013. In the village of Vukovo, the area “Locality of the Anise-leaved Mullein – Vukovo,” also designated in 2013, protects the population of this plant (Verbascum anisophyllum Murb.) and its habitat. The two protected areas are clearly distinguished by the plants and locations named for each.

Churches and monastic history

The Boboshevo Monastery of Saint Dimitar was founded in the early 10th century. Saint John of Rila began his monastic life there. One building of the monastery church remains and has been fully restored. For travelers interested in cultural history, this place connects a specific early date with the history of Saint John of Rila.

Other churches are explicitly located in different places within the wider Boboshevo destination. The Church of Sveti Nikolay in the village of Vukovo is a 16th-century architectural and artistic monument of national significance; it was designated as such in 1969. The Church of Sveta Petka is also in Vukovo. It was built in the second half of the 16th century and painted in 1592. The two dates highlight different aspects of history: for Sveti Nikolay, the monument designation is associated with a specific year, while for Sveta Petka, the dates of construction and painting are recorded.

Monastery feast days and a place of veneration

The Ruen Monastery of Sveti Yoan Rilski in the wider Boboshevo destination celebrates three monastery feast days each year: on July 1, August 18 and October 19. If you are considering traveling on one of these days, check the current services schedule. Above the monastery, in the forest, there is a small rock niche sheltered by a stone wall. Locals venerate it as the first hermit’s cave of Saint John of Rila. The niche can be reached on foot in about ten minutes.

Culinary connections and a museum in Boboshevo

The Boboshevo area is known for its vineyards, cherries and apples. Boboshevo Culinary, held on March 18, 2017, offers a clearly dated culinary connection: appetizers, main courses, desserts and breads were presented at the event. This is a historical date, not information about a current event program.

The Nikifor Bibin House Museum, with a permanent museum collection, is located in the center of Boboshevo. The museum is open year-round from Monday to Friday; opening arrangements may change. Check them before planning a visit. This lets you plan your museum visit for a specific day of the week without assuming that opening arrangements are unchanging.

Choose the right location for your hotel search

When searching for a hotel in Dobrovo, it helps to distinguish the local connection to nature from the landscape and cultural themes of the wider Boboshevo destination. If one of the churches, the monastery or the museum is the focus of your trip, include its stated location in your plans.
