Boychinovtsi combines its role as an important railway hub with the municipality’s natural and cultural attractions. When planning your trip, it is worth keeping both in mind: the railway helps you plan your journey, while several nature and leisure attractions are tied to specific places within the municipality. You can first decide whether your stay will depend primarily on the train connection, a seasonal landscape feature or a cultural event.

Getting There and Getting Oriented

As an important railway hub, Boychinovtsi connects the municipality and the regional centre of Montana with Vidin and Sofia. Rail and bus services serve the municipality; in addition to Boychinovtsi, the railway network includes Murchevo, Ohrid, Pali lula and Erden. Check train and bus connections for your specific travel date before setting off. The international E-79 road runs 17 kilometres from Boychinovtsi. Use this distance as a guide, and check the current route and road conditions before travelling.

Landscape and Nature

Boychinovtsi Municipality lies in the Danubian Plain, with a small part extending into the Pre-Balkan foothills of the western Balkan Mountains. Its territory includes the fertile river valleys of the Ogosta, Botunya and Ribine. The rare water lily Castalia alba occurs along the Ribine in the Lehchevo area. The natural attractions therefore range from the broader landscape to a distinctive plant species by the river.

Near Madan is the municipality’s densest peony meadow. Its seasonal visibility depends on the flowering period, so take this into account when planning a visit. The municipality is also home to four old trees under observation: three Turkey oaks and one English oak. They are located in the Gorno Livage area of Murchevo and in the former schoolyard in Boychinovtsi’s Ogosta district.

Culture and Activities

The Church of Saint George the Victorious in Boychinovtsi was among the municipality’s surviving and functioning churches in 2020. In May 2017, Boychinovtsi hosted the “Spring by the Ogosta” cultural festival, continuing a local tradition. If a festival date affects your trip, check the dates for the year you wish to visit.

In Erden, within the municipality, an air sports centre offers flying activities, parachute jumps, sightseeing and advertising flights, as well as training for paragliding, gliding and parachute pilots. Organised competitions are also part of the programme. Sport fishing and recreation have been proposed as future developments for the Madanska Bara Reservoir near Madan. The municipality has also identified ecological and ornithological tourist routes in the Natura 2000 areas of Păstrina and Portitovtsi–Vladimirovo, along the Ogosta, as possible developments.
