Georgi Damyanovo appeals to travelers who want to take cultural and scenic destinations into account when choosing a hotel. The municipality of Georgi Damyanovo extends from Kopren Peak in the Western Stara Planina to Shiroka Planina and includes the valley of the Ogosta River. The sights are spread across different places within the municipality. When planning your trip, you can therefore first decide whether a monastery and churches, nature or regional traditions should shape your stay.

Monastery and churches in the municipality

The Lopushanski Monastery is about one kilometer from Georgi Damyanovo and is a national cultural monument. The monastery comprises a church, residential and utility buildings, a white-stone well and a stone perimeter wall. Thus, the site encompasses more than the church building: the buildings and enclosed grounds are also part of its described character. The monastery church is the third-largest monastery church in Bulgaria.

Other churches in the municipality of Georgi Damyanovo represent different periods of construction. In the village of Gavril Genovo, the Church of St. George the Victorious was built in 1872. The Church of St. Apostles Peter and Paul in Dalgi del was built in 1882 as a unique stone structure. Together with Lopushanski Monastery, these provide several examples of sacred architecture: a monastery complex and churches in two villages in the municipality.

Crafts, a museum and traditional customs

The house museum “Georgi Damyanov” is located in the center of the village of Georgi Damyanovo. It presents various stages in Georgi Damyanov’s life and career, offering a biographical focus alongside the churches and monastery. In Kopylovtsi and Glavanovtsi, traditional carpet weaving, including Chiprovtsi carpets, is part of the regional cultural heritage.

Festive and ritual culture is also part of community life. In Kopylovtsi, Govezhda and Georgi Damyanovo, the customs of Jordanovden and Ivanovden, which involve bathing for health, are part of the traditional heritage. Crafts and rituals offer two different perspectives: carpet weaving reflects textile skills, while the two customs showcase the festive and ritual sphere. If cultural themes are important to you when planning your trip, architectural history, biography, crafts and customs are all represented here.

Landscape and protected nature

The landscape of the municipality of Georgi Damyanovo stretches from the mountains to the Ogosta valley. The Kopren–Ravno Buche–Kalimanitsa–Deyanitsa protected area includes land in Kopylovtsi within the municipality. Kopylovtsi is also home to Voden Skok waterfall, a protected natural landmark. The protected area and the waterfall are two distinct natural features of the village: one covers a landscape, while the other is a named natural landmark.

The Usketo protected area lies in the Western Balkan region of Dalgi del at an altitude of 1,550 meters. It includes a natural, centuries-old spruce forest. The Natura 2000 protected area “Western Balkan” (BG0002002), which protects wild birds under Directive 79/409, is also located within the municipality of Georgi Damyanovo. While Usketo is characterized by its ancient spruce forest, the focus of the Natura 2000 area is bird protection.

Ecotrails and other nature destinations

The municipality is associated with rural, hunting and fishing tourism. Ecotrails can be found around Kopren Hut and Katsa Kamak, near the Serbian border. When planning a specific hike, it is advisable to check current trail conditions. In Dalgi del, “Mladenin vir” is a picnic area with a natural spring and a constructed well. Nature offers several different options here: ecotrails, a named picnic area, protected landscapes and individual natural attractions.

Other natural attractions in the municipality include “Bear Hole” cave in the village of Kamenna Riksa and “Razhena bara” waterfall in the village of Elovitsa. Check current access conditions for both places before planning your visit.
